Synthetic Biology is a relatively new discipline for which there are a large number of definitions, although practically all of them incorporate the ideas of molecular biology, genetics, and engineering. For many scientists, it involves rearranging natural DNA sequences, generating artificial constructs or gene networks that have a behavior not existing in nature and of an applied nature. Philosophically, it is very similar to Systems Biology, as it also tries to integrate descriptive biology into a mathematical framework using models and simulations.La Biología Sintética es una disciplina relativamente nueva para la cual existen una gran cantidad de definiciones, aunque prácticamente todas ellas incorporan las ideas de biología molecular, genética y ingeniería. Para muchos científicos se trata de reordenar secuencias de ADN naturales, generando constructos o redes artificiales de genes que tengan un comportamiento no existente en la naturaleza y de carácter aplicado. Por filosofía se parece mucho a la Biología de Sistemas, ya que también intenta integrar en un marco matemático la biología descriptiva usando modelos y simulaciones
