Small vessel diseases (SVD) of the brain are common causes of stroke (both ischemic and hemorrhagic) and of dementia. However, they are not identified as such in the diagnostic classification of stroke. For example, the widely use Toast classification classifies ischemic strokes in 5 groups: atherosclerosis, cardio-embolic, Lacunar, other determined etiology, undetermined etiology
