Criminalization of social movements through speech of the liberal and conservative media: The case of the platform affected by the mortgage and “escraches”

Abstract

Los medios de comunicación generan estados de opinión y contribuyen a la construcción de las realidades sociales. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la representación discursiva de la Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca (PAH) por parte de La Razón, Libertad Digital y ABC durante la campaña “Hay vidas en juego” en la que se utilizaron los escraches como manifestación popular de denuncia. La prensa conservadora y liberal dota de una resignificación negativa a este movimiento social forzando su desplazamiento hacia la “anormalidad”, limitando su derecho a discrepar de decisiones políticas y a ocupar su espacio en la sociedad civil mediante una amplificada violencia mediática. Mediante el enfoque de Análisis Crítico del Discurso el artículo profundiza en cómo estos diarios utilizan la violencia discursiva como estrategia que legitima las decisiones políticas de ciertas hegemonías y cómo afecta a la formación de la imagen de este movimiento social.The media generate statements of opinion and contribute to the construction of social realities. The aim of this paper is to analyze the performance of the Platform of People Affected by Mortgage (PAH) by La Razón, Libertad Digital and ABC during the campeign “Hay vidas en juego” in which they used “escraches” as popular manifestation of complaint. The conservative and liberal press gives new meaning to this social movement forcing their displacement, limiting their right to disagree with political decisions and take their place in civil society through an amplified media violence. Using the approach of critical discourse analysis to the analysis of selected PAH news on the time - coincident with its campaign escraches “ Lives are at stake ,” - the article explores how these media used the news as strategy legitimize the political decisions of certain hegemonies and how it affects the image formation of this social movement
