Physiological Function of Melatonin

Abstract

Melatonin pineal bez tarafından salgılanan ve gece-gündüz ritmini düzenlemekle görevli olan bir hormon olup, 1991 yılında antloksldan etkilerinin varlığı gösterilmiştir. Melatoninin pineal ekstrelerde izolasyonundan sonra, fotoperiyodizm, puberte ve uyku gibi pek çok fizyolojik ve patolojik durumda rolü araştırılmıştır. Amfofilik yapısı ve küçük moleküllü olması nedeniyle organizmada yaygın dağılım gösterir, hücresel kompartmanlara kolayca girer. Güçlü antloksldan özelliği olan bu doğal bileşik İn vltro ve İn vlvo güçlü bir sitostatik ajandır. Melatoninin etkinliği; oküler hastalıklarda, diyabette, romatold artrltte, flbromyaljlde, kronik yorgunluk sendromunda, enfeksiyon hastalıklarında, nörolojik hastalıklarda, uyku bozukluklarında, yaşlanmada ve depresyonda gösterilmiştir. Bu derlemede melatoninin farmakoklnetlk özellikleri İle fizyolojik ve farmakolojik etkileri özetlenmiştir.Melatonin; secreted from the pineal gland. Following Its Isolation from pineal extracts, the role of me¬latonin In many pyslologlcal and pathological events like photoperlodlsm, puberty and sleep has been Investigated. Me¬latonin Is ubiquitously distributed and because of Its small size and amphiphilic nature. It Is able to reach easily all cellular and subcellular compartments. It Is a natural occurring compound with well-known antioxidant properties and has been proven as a powerful cytostatic drug In vitro as well as In vivo.The efficacy of melatonin has been assessed as a treatment of ocular diseases, blood diseases, gastrointestinal tract diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome.
