His skills in these areas, alongwith his management abilities and hiscommiunent to Christian service, have led himinto many varied and notable accomplishments.For eleven years he was the Editorial Directorand General Manager of the ZondervanPublishing House. From 195 L-63 he wasExecutive Director and then President of Youthfor Christ. Since L963 he has served WorldVision as Exocutive Vice-President and iscurently President.Dr. Engsuom has also served his alma mater asDirector of Public Relations, as a member andChairman of the Board of Trustees. He is anhonorary lifetime trustee.As a prolific author and editor, Dr. Engstromhas written 31 books and hundreds of magazLne !articles. Presently, he serves as publisher ofWorldVision magazine.Ted and Dorothy Engstrom have been ma:ried lfor 47 years and reside in Pasadena, California.They are the parents of three children.EngstromTed and Dorothy Engstrom areboth 1938 graduates of TaylorUniversiry.Ricend E.The Rice Bell Tower is being presented toTaylor University by Garnet I. Rice in memoryof her husband Raymond E. Rice, & Christianstudent, teacher, businessman, andphilanthropist. Mr. Rice grew up in the TaSrlorcommunity while his father sered as theBusiness Manager at Taylor University fromL923-25. Believing that the Lord definitely ledhim into the prosperous Darry Queen franchisefor the state of Missouri, Ray Rice decided thatinvesting in Taylor "would be a good way toperform an important Christian seryice."Earlier the Rices presented their prized antiquecream pitcher collection to the university.Ray Rice surnmed up his convictions bysaying, "More and more as you mature, )ouwant to take the Lord as your partner and seekHis guidance. This is the right way to beginlife and to end it."TheZondervAnLibraryInside the Pat and Mary Zondervan Library,the central stairway leads up to the main bookcollection or down to the offices, technicalservices, Garnet I. Rice faculty/staff lounge,word processing rooms, and Elwood H. Hillisconference room. To the right of the mainstairw&y, beyond the catalog and the referenceoffices, are the reference collection, the backfiles of periodicals, and the begrnning of thebook collection. Current newspapers areshelved beside the main enffance. Periodicalindexes are on shelving near the reference desk.Beyond the file cabinets containing pamphletmaterial is the microform area with readers andprinters for photocopying microfilm andmicrofiche. Current issues of periodicals a"re ondisplay beyond the microforms. Twelve studyrooms are available on the main and upperfloors: eight for group study and four forresearch.To the left of the main stairway is the LearningSupport Center. The LSC stafi assists student!in improving verbal and math skills through useof a micro-computer lab and other instructionalmedia. Part of the LSC is a Music ListeningArea, control room, ifid Ruth M. Floodclassroom for group listening. Conduits runthrough the floor of the LSC every five feetwith junction boxes on the conduits every fivefeet. Early in the planning processsuggestions were made to have doors on allsides of the buildiilB, although a libraryfunctions best with only one public entranceGalleriaand exit. Students and faculty members mademeaningful suggestions to the arghitects duringa two-duy session held on campus. The idea '-)persisted of providing outside doors on twoopposite sides of the building so that srudenrscould walk through the building. The architectssolved this beautifully with the EngstromGalleria. The library proper has only oneoutside door, and thht door opens inio theEngstrom Galleria. On the opposite side ofthe galleria are the 24-hour study room, thearchives, an informal study lounge, and restrooms.One of the fttare beautiful spotson Taylor's campus is theEngstrom Galleria. It providesa cornf,ortable and attractivesetting fo, study or relaxation.RiceBell TowerTIrc Rice BelI Tower is apowerful symbol of Taylor'ssteadfast belief in theintegration of faith andlearning.As the focal point of the campus, the Rice BellTower symbolizes the integration of faith andlearning which is sffessed in the development ofthe whole person at Taylor. These aspects areexpressed by the two towers which are joinedtogether at the top by the speaker system of thecarillon whose bells are in the HermansonMusic Center.Crosses, representing Jesus Christ, thefoundation of the Christian faith, are embossedin the brick bases of the towers. Floodlightsilluminate the tower at night, suggesting therepresentation of Jesus Christ as the light of theworld.A tower on the adminisration building had beenthe emblem of Taylor University until 1960when the building was destroyed by fire.
