Painting Madonna with Saints from the Church of St. Helen of the Cross in Vrtlinska near Čazma: Style, Iconography and Restoration Work

Abstract

Ovaj diplomski rad bavi se slikom “Bogorodica među svecima” iz crkve sv. Jelene Križarice u Vrtlinskoj kod Čazme. U radu se donosi ikonografska anliza djela i pregled konzervatorsko-restauratorskih radova provedenih na slici. Također, pojašnjava se utjecaj mikroklimatskih uvjeta na materijal slike i način na koji je odgovarajuća restauratorska intervencija poduzeta prihvatljivim konzervatorskim materijalima i metodama. Slika je restaurirana u Hrvatskom restauratorskom zavodu u Zagrebu na Odjelu za štafelajno slikarstvo, Odsjek III. Rad sadrži fotografije koje dokumentiraju cijeli proces restauratorskih radova na slici, te pokazuju stanje slike prije, tokom i nakon završetka radova. Uz dozvolu Hrvatskog restauratorskog zavoda, korištene su dokumentacija i bilješke restauratora koji su bili zaduženi za rad na slici, za detaljan uvid u konzervatorsko-restauratorske radove.This thesis deals with the restoration work and iconography of the painting Madonna with Saints, from the Church of St. Helena of the Cross in Vrtlinska near Čazma, with particular emphasis on the process of conservation and restoration. The restoration work was done in The Croatian Conservation Institute. A number of photographs taken by the restorers and conservators before, during and after the restoration work are used to illustrate the whole procedure. This study also shows how the effect of a less favorable microclimate present in the church affects the aged materials present in the 18th century painting. Furthermore, this thesis presents the procedure of restoration from start to finish, revealing the techniques, tools and methods used by the restorers in their practice, and clarifying how the use of certain materials helps prevent future damage to the painting
