Acquisition of the Croatian and Czech language at preschool age

Abstract

This thesis represented a conundrum of acquiring a foreign language in children of preschool age with a focus on different native languages of these children. At the beginning of the thesis the term “Slavic languages” was defined and their division explained, followed by short descriptions of main representatives of each language group. In this division, the thesis focused on Czech and Croatian languages which belong to different groups of Slavic languages. In addition, the thesis includes an analysis of the term “bilingualism” and the way in which the children of preschool age acquire a foreign language. The final part of the thesis included a survey conducted in two kindergartens in Bjelovar-Bilogora County where native languages of the children attending are different. The aim of the survey was to determine how children acquire a foreign language with the assistance of a familiar melody
