Jan. 1990 · ,., If J - ~ - o< 7 - / MOSSES OF THE BIG SOUTH FORK NATIONAL RIVER AND RECREATION AREA (KENTUCKY) During the summer of 1989, collections were made of ~he I mosses in the Kentucky portion of the Big South F9rk National River and Recreation Area. Sites which were representative of the main habitats found in the park were chosen for the inventory. These different habitat types include the main river corridor, gorges of tributaries, ridgetop forests, the tops of south-facing sandstone bluffs, a swampy streamhead forest, .boulder bars along the river, and a sandstone glade. An attempt was made to obtain complete species lists for each of these habitats and in the effort 437 collections were made. A total of 128 species were found (Appendix 1). Seven of these are previously unreported for Kentucky. They are: Cirriphyllum piliferum (Hedw.) Grout, Fontinalis hypnoides C.J. Hartm., Herpetineuron toccoae (Sull. & Lesq. ex Sull.) Card., ~l~!Yii~!Y~ i~£&~E~~££i£ii~~ (Brid.) Crum, Pylaisiella polyantha (Hedw.) Grout, Sphagnum capillifolium (Ehrh.) Hedw., and Tetrodontium brownianum (Dicks.) Schwaegr. In November, 1989, results of this study based on :330 ' identified specimens were presented at the Kentucky Academy of Science meeting. Further field work is planned as the total moss flora of the recreation area probably consists of 150 - 200 species.
