Exploring undergraduate students' awareness of cardiac health

Abstract

Heart disease has been the leading cause of death in the United States for almost a century. While there is a lot of research currently being done on medical techniques and treatments for cardiac disease, this study aims to figure out what improves a student's awareness on cardiac health. Thus, the study explores cardiac health awareness among students at UT-Austin within different classifications. This exploratory study will begin by using a preliminary survey. This preliminary electronic survey was administered to about 100 people who provided feedback on the survey experience. The survey will be reevaluated and modified, based on the feedback, to produce a final survey, which will be distributed to the sample student population in order to collect data. Ultimately, the efforts in this exploratory study will generate an improved cardiac health awareness on campus, become a source of information on the awareness of college students on cardiac health, allow students to understand essential health risks and potential preventative measures, and improve our understanding of survey-based research on student subjects. More importantly, it will begin to expose some of the effects of unsuccessful awareness campaigns through our questionnaire. The results may eventually help develop an improved system to equip students with life-long knowledge regarding cardiovascular health.Biological Sciences, School o
