Academic and professional characterization of physical education

Abstract

Trying to surpass the current identity crisis of the physical education, many works, outlining its basic characteristics, have been presented. But this effort has not achieved the desired results because the belief that physical education and sports are interrelated entities and because the undistinguished use of the term physical education signifying field of study, professional course, professional performance and curricular discipline. The purpose of this work is to present some reflections about the characteristics of the physical education at academic and professional levels. At academic level, it's supposed that production and dissemination of knowledge is the main role of university and that offering professional courses are a complex kind of dissemination of knowledge. To justify its place in the university, physical education must have a specific and exclusive object of study, in this work, understood as an integrative theme, agogic and professionally oriented. At professional level, it is postulated that many courses can be derived from the same theme of study and that they should emphasize the theoretical basis of the professional performance. And finally, it is also recommended that the curricular discipline of physical education should transmit practical and theoretical knowledge, contributing to the educational process of the human beingTentando contribuir para a superação da crise de identidade que a educação física atravessa, têm sido apresentadas várias propostas de caracterização, sem, contudo, alcançar os resultados desejados por se acreditar que há uma intersecção entre educação física e esporte e/ou porque o termo educação física é empregado indiferenciadamente para significar área de estudo, formação profissional, atuação profissional e disciplina curricular. O objetivo desse trabalho é apresentar algumas reflexões que possam servir de subsídio para a caracterização da educação física nos níveis acadêmico e profissional. A nível acadêmico, admite-se que o papel da universidade é a produção e disseminação de conhecimento, incluindo como disseminação o oferecimento de cursos profissionalizantes. Para justificar sua presença na universidade, a educação física deve possuir um objeto de estudo específico e exclusivo, nesse trabalho, entendido como um tema integrativo de estudo, com um caráter agógico e orientado para a atuação profissional. A nível profissinal, defende-se o oferecimento de vários cursos derivados da mesma área temática, com ênfase na formação teórica e sugere-se que a disciplina curricular educação física deve transmitir conhecimentos práticos e teóricos que contribuam para o processo de educação do ser human
