Abstract
The clichés relating to the Antiquity have a tendency to oppose the austere Roman peasant-soldier to the beautiful Greek athlete, and to present the Roman like a spectator, and not actually practicing a sport activity. By means of written documents, iconography and archaeological traces, this work wants to present an overview of so-called “sports” activities in Roman times, verify if their origins are truly Greek and see how “sport” was practiced in the Roman society.Les clichés relatifs à l’Antiquité ont d‘une part tendance à opposer l’austère paysan-soldat romain au bel athlète grec, et d’autre part à présenter le Romain comme un spectateur, et non pas pratiquant d’une activité sportive. En s’appuyant sur les sources littéraires, iconographiques, archéologiques, et par le biais d’une synthèse bibliographique, ce travail a pour but de présenter un aperçu des activités dites « sportives » à l’époque romaine, vérifier si leurs origines sont véritablement grecques et voir la manière dont le « sport » était pratiqué dans l’empire société
