Investigações arqueológicas no médio/ baixo vale do Ribeira de Iguape, São Paulo

Abstract

Since 1981, the middle/upper Ribeira valley, which is located the extreme Southwest portion of São Paulo State, has been studied through systematic archaeological research. Surveys performed in a general area in the Middle valley and in specific areas in the Upper valley allowed for the identification of around 300 sites, which are related to at least three distinct pre-colonial occupations. All three occupations are associated to non-local cultural complexes, being the result of population movements either from the Atlantic shore or from the Southern Brazilian Plateau. The advance of the research is, thus, directly linked toa extra-regional focus, where the study of the borderlines with both the shore and the plateau shall present a great potential of revealing former patterns of cultural contact and territoriality. Given this, we have surveyed an area bordering the Coastal lowlands. From this survey, 13 sites were identified. The results of this work are presented in this article, together with an analyzes of the data within the overall context of the pre-colonial occupation of the whole Ribeira valley.Desde 1981, o médio/alto vale do Ribeira de Iguape, situado no extremo sudoeste do Estado de São Paulo, vem sendo objeto de pesquisás arqueológicas sistemáticas. Levantamentos realizados em uma área-piloto do médio vale e áreas específicas do alto vale resultaram na identificação de aproximadamente 300 sítios, relacionados ao menos a três ocupações pré-coloniais distintas que ali se desenvolveram. Todas elas remetem a contextos culturais externos, sendo resultado do deslocamento de grupos humanos vindos do litoral ou do planalto. O avanço das discussões está, assim, diretamente relacionado a enfoques extra-regionais, onde a investigação das áreas limítrofes com o planalto e com o litoral reúne grande potencial informativo, principalmente no que diz respeito às discussões sobre contatos culturais e delimitação de territórios de assentamento. Diante deste contexto, foram realizadas prospecções em área próxima ao limite com a Baixada Litorânea, levando à identificação de mais 13 sítios. Os resultados deste trabalho são apresentados no presente artigo, incluindo uma análise dos dados dentro da problemática definida para o vale do Ribeira como um todo
