Abstract
A partir da legislação municipal, dos registros policiais e da correspondência da Câmara de Porto Alegre, analisamos a organização gradual do mercado de trabalho na segunda metade do século XIX na cidade de Porto Alegre, capital da Província do Rio Grande do Sul. . Procurou-se verificar como condições restritivas foram empregadas para organizar a mão-de-obra que devia estar a disposição do mercado, de acordo com uma ética do trabalho e características que foram impostas sobre a população termos de atividade, esforço, submissão, sobriedade, moralidade e obediência as leis.Through of the municipal legislation, the polices records and the mail of the City Hall of Porto Alegre, we have analysed the gradual organization of the work market in the second part in the nineteen century in the city of the Porto Alegre. We seek to verify how a set of restrictive conditions have been employed for the organize the workers by market disposition, acccording a work ethics and characteristics which are translated on the population in terms of active, dilligent, submissive, temperate, moralized and obedient to the laws behaviors
