Medicina (Ribeirão Preto) 2010;43(4): 375-6Two main factors are determinants of the irregular periodicity of a journal: the lack ofpapers to be published and the lack of funds for regularprinting of the issues. This generates lack of interest onthe part of readers and of authors, who end up by notsubmitting papers to be judged and published on the basisof merit. All of this leads to low motivation also regardingpossible sponsors, which in turn leads to reduced fundingand to the end of the journal itself. It is a natural evolutionof no interest to anyone.When we became responsible for the editorialboard of the journal Medicina, the financial resourcesneeded to keep the journal functioning, with issues printedon paper, did not exist. Very few papers were submittedfor publication. Thus, the classical vicious cycle wasestablished: lack of funds, delayed printing, lack of regularperiodicity, few papers for publication, and  so on.In view of this scenario, we abolished the paperversion and the journal started to be publishedelectronically1, on line. Within about one year the numberof papers increased, the process of emission of externalreviews was streamlined and today we are one step awayfrom having regular periodicity in the internet, on line2.Our prediction is that, starting September or October ofnext year (2011) each issue will be available on theinternet without delay.Revista Medicina, Ribeirão Preto.A few steps away from RegularPeriodicityRevista Medicina, Ribeirão Preto.
