Death: considerations for the medical practice

Abstract

A morte é parte integrante da vida e como tal, objetivo da medicina. A definição de morte vem sofrendo modificações em decorrência do avanço tecnológico da medicina e da disponibilidade de informação, ficando claro que sua definição deve levar em consideração os valores culturais da sociedade em questão e não somente o conhecimento médico. A busca de uma melhor definição de morte trouxe uma série de conflitos de ordem ética, agravados em grande parte pela crise de credibilidade que a medicina moderna vivencia. Um resgate dos valores da medicina, fundamentados na relação médico-paciente, bem como uma ampla discussão envolvendo toda a sociedade sobre a definição de morte e os cuidados que a medicina deve oferecer aos pacientes que estão morrendo, devem ser implementados. A discussão destes valores deve começar na faculdade de medicina e deve envolver todas as profissões que auxiliem a profissão médica.Death is part of life and, as well, objective of medicine. The definition of death is being modified due to the technologic advances and the availability of information, pointing that its definition should consider cultural values of a specific society besides the medical knowledge.The search of a better definition of death brought innumerous conflicts of medical ethics, worsened in part by the credibility crisis that the modern medicine experiences. The recall of medical values, based on the medical –patient relationship, as well as an ample discussion including the society as a hole about the definition of death and the care that the medicine should provide, should be implemented. The discussion of these values should start in the medical faculties and include every auxiliary profession
