A discussion of how an optimization course fits into the undergraduate mathematics curriculu

People routinely ponder “how much ” or “how little, ” and these questions have naturally found their way into the bedrock of mathematics. Indeed, math-ematics abounds with the max, min, sup and inf operators, and as such, a study of optimization supports, in some degree, the spectrum of mathematics and its applications. The field’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths, but it is also one of its biggest curricular challenges. For what does it mean to study and teach optimization?
