Most of t h e i s l a n d i s c o v e r e d b y P l e i s t o c e n e g l a c i a l d e b r i s , a n d b e d r o c k o u t c r o p s a r e s c a n t y . T h e b e d r o c k c o n s i s t s of s l a t e s a n d q u a r t z i t e s of t h e M e g u m a g r o u p ( O r d o v i c i a n ? ) on t h e e a s t e r n h a l f , a n d g r a n i t e s ( D e v o n i a n ) o n t h e w e s t e r n h a l f of t h e i s l a n d . T h e s a m p l e s w e r e o b t a i n e d b y e i t h e r a D i e t z - L a f o n d s n a p p e r o r a v a n V e e n g r a b s a m p l e r . T h e s a m p l i n g g r i d i s b a s e d on a h a l f - m i n u t e s p a c i n g b o t h i n l o n g i t u d e a n d l a t i t u d e . C o n t i n u o u s s e i s m i c p r o f i l i n g i s to b e c a r r i e d o u t i n t h e n e a r f u t u r e . A t s o m e s t a t i o n s , s a m p l e s c o u l d n o t b e r e t r i e v e d d e s p i t e m a n y a t t e m p t s . T h i s m a y b e a t t r i b u t e d to o c c u r r e n c e s of c o a r s e g r a v e l l y b o t t o m s e d i m e n t s o r b e d r o c k . In t h e a b s e n c e of s u b - b o t t o m p r o f i l e s , n o a t t e m p t w a s m a d e to d i f f e r e n t i a t e b e t w e e n b e d r o c k a n d r e s i d u a l g r a v e l b o t t o m . A l l s t a t i o n s f r o m w h i c h s a m p l e s w e r e n o t r e t r i e v e d a r e a s s u m e d to b e l o c a t e d o v e r n o n - d e p o s i t i o n a l s i t e s . B a t h y m e t r i c a l l y , t h e a r e a c a n b e d i v i d e d i n t o t w o m a i n p a r t s : t h e n o r t h e r n h a l f c o m p r i s i n g B a r r i n g t o n B a y a n d B a r r i n g t o n P a s s a g e ; a n d t h e s o u t h e r n h a l f w h i c h c o n n e c t s t h e two b a y s to t h e A t l a n t i c O c e a n . T h e s o u t h e r n h a l f of t h e a r e a h a s a g r e a t e r a v e r a g e d e p t h ( d e e p e r t h a n s i x f a t h o m s ) . In t h e l o w e r w e s t e r n p a r t of B a r r i n g t o n P a s s a g e , m a n y s h o a l s a n d l e d g e s a r e p r e s e n t . Of t h e two s h o a l s s o u t h of t h e C a p e , t h e o n e f u r t h e r to t h e w e s t i s a l i n e a r s t r u c t u r e . T h e l o n g a x i s of t h i s s t r u c t u r e i s o r i e n t e d i n a n o r t h - s o u t h d i r e c t i o n , p o s s i b l y p a r a l l e l to t h e d i r e c t i o n of t h e l a s t g l a c i a l a d v a n c e . T h e o f f s h o r e a r e a a r o u n d C a p e S a b l e I s l a n d c a n b e d i v i d e d i n t o t w o p a r t s on t h e b a s i s of s e d i m e n t d i s t r i b u t i o n . B a r r i n g t o n B a y a n d B a r r i n g t o n P a s s a g e a r e c h a r a c t e r i z e d b y d e p o s i t i o n a l f a c i e s , t h e s e d i m e n t s b e i n g v a r i o u s m i x t u r e s of g r a v e l , s a n d a n d m u d . T h e s o u t h e r n a n d s o u t h -e a s t e r n p a r t of t h e a r e a u n d e r i n v e s t i g a t i o n i s c h a r a c t e r i z e d b y n o n - d e p o s i t i o n a l o r r e s i d u a l t y p e s e d i m e n t s , m o s t l y g r a v e l s . A b a n d of g r a v e l l y s a n d h a s b e e n l o c a t e d i n B a r r i n g t o n B a y . I t s e e m s to f o r m a d e l t a - t y p e d e p o s i t w h i c h m e r g e s i n t o t h e g r a v e l l y s e d i m e n t s of t h e b a y f l o o r f u r t h e r t o t h e s o u t h . G r a v e l l y m u d d y s a n d s h a v e b e e n e n c o u n t e r e d i n t h e u p p e r c e n t r a l p a r t of B a r r i n g t o n B a y . T h e u p p e r p a r t s of B a r r i n g t o n P a s s a g e a r e s i t e s of m u d d e p o s i t i o n . M u d i s a l s o d e p o s i t e d i n t h e u p p e r p a r t s of B a r r i n g t o n B a y . S o u t h of t h e C a p e , b e t w e e n t h e s h o a l s a n d a t a d e p t h of s i x f a t h o m ^ s a n d s c o n s i s t i n g of a p p r o x i m a t e l y 60 p e r c e n t m i n e r a l g r a i n s a n d 4 0 p e r c e n t s h e l l f r a g m e n t s w e r e f o u n d . T h e m i n e r a l g r a i n s a r e i n t h e s i z e r a n g e f r o m 1 /2 to 1 m m i n d i a m e t e r , t h e s h e l l f r a g m e n t s r a n g e i n s i z e f r o m 1 to 2 m m . B o t h f r a c t i o n s a r e w e l l s o r t e d i n t h e m s e l v e s . T h e c o l o u r of t h e " m u d s " i s u s u a l l y b l a c k a n d m o s t l y t h e y c o n t a i n c o n s i d e r a b l e a m o u n t s of o r g a n i c m a t e r i a l . To d a t e o n l y t h r e e of t h e s e s a m p l e s w e r e a n a l y z e d w h i c h c o n t a i n e d a p p r o x i m a t e l y 90 p e r c e n t of s i l t a n d c l a y s i z e f r a c t i o n s . T h e s e s a m p l e s w e r e a l l c o l l e c t e d i n t h e B a r r i n g t o n P a s s a g e a r e a . In a l l t h e o t h e r " m u d " s a m p l e s t h e c o n t e n t of t h e - 6 2 ^ g r a i n s i z e f r a c t i o n w a s c o n s i d e r a b l y l o w e r . T h e g r a v e l s a r e c o m p o s e d m a i n l y of g r a n i t e p e b b l e s , a s w e l l a s s l a t e a n d q u a r t z i t e p e b b l e s . T h e l a t t e r t w o a r e a l m o s t c e r t a i n l y d e r i v e d f r o m t h e M e g u m a G r o u p . T h i s g r a v e l r e p r e s e n t s a r e s i d u a l f a c i e s , t h a t i s , t h e p e b b l e s a r e w a s h e d , r e s i d u a l , c o a r s e m a t e r i a l f r o m p a r e n t g l a c i a l d e b r i s . T h e p e b b l e s a r e w e l l r o u n d e d , a n d a r e c o m m o n l y e n c r u s t e d w i t h a l g a l m a t e r i a l ( l i t h o t h a m n i o n ) . T h e r e s u l t s of t h e p r e l i m i n a r y s u r v e y s h o w a w i d e v a r i e t y in t h e t e x t u r a l c o m p o s i t i o n of t h e b o t t o m s e d i m e n t s a r o u n d C a p e S a b l e I s l a n d . V a r i o u s l i t h o l o g i c u n i t s r e f l e c t d i f f e r e n c e s i n t h e h y d r o d y n a m i c r e g i m e of t h e b o t t o m c u r r e n t s of t h e a r e a . To d a t e n o s u c c e s s f u l b o t t o m c u r r e n t m e a s u r e m e n t s h a v e b e e n m a d e . P r e l i m i n a r y r e s u l t s o b t a i n e d w i t h a K e l v i n H u g h e s d i r e c t - r e a d i n g c u r r e n t m e t e r a p p e a r to b e a m b i g u o u s . A n e w a t t e m p t to m e a s u r e a n d r e c o r d t h e b o t t o m c u r r e n t s w i l l b e m a d e i n t h e n e a r f u t u r e . F o r t h i s p u r p o s e s e l f - r e c o r d i n g c u r r e n t m e t e r s m o o r e d to t h e o c e a n b o t t o m w i l l b e u s e d . T h e o b s e r v a t i o n t i m e a t e a c h s t a t i o n w i l l b e e x t e n d e d to 29 d a y s . T h i s s u r v e y i s e x p e c t e d to p r o v i d e t h e d a t a f r o m w h i c h a r e g i o n a l p i c t u r e of t h e h y d r o d y n a m i c e n e r g y p a t t e r n a n d i t s c h a n g e s c a n b e d e r i v e d . S u b s e q u e n t l y a n a t t e m p t w i l l b e m a d e to c o r r e l a t e t h i s p a t t e r n w i t h t h e v a r i o u s b o t t o m s e d i m e n t s of t he e n v i r o n m e n t s a r o u n d C a p e S a b l e I s l a n d .
