'Wan Azizah isback­up candidate'ADIB POVERAAND IU SHAZWANIparty polls: Anwarsays wife will quitrace if his sodomyconviction isoverturnedPARTI Keadilan Rakyat (PKR)de facto leader Datuk SeriAnwar Ibrahim claimed thathis wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan AzizahIsmail, filed her nomination papersto defend the president's post inthe party as part of their back­upplan should he be disqualifiedfrom the race.The opposition leader and Per­matang Pauh member of parlia­ment also hinted that his wifewould withdraw from the raceshould he get the green light to+contest the party's top post.Anwar, who has filed an appealagainst his sodomy conviction bythe Court of Appeal at the FederalCourt, denied speculation thatboth he and Wan Azizah were eye­ing the post."It is just part of the back­upplan. If I get the clearance to con­test, Wan Azizah will withdraw tomake way for me," he said after aceramah organised by the PokokSena Pas division here last night.In Petiling Jaya, Wan Azizah'sshocking move to square offagainst Anwar was confirmed byPKR central election committeechairman Datuk Johari Abdul afternomination for the party pollsclosed at 5pm at the party head­quarters here yesterday.Wan Azizah, through her rep­resentative, filed her nominationpapers in the afternoon, but hercandidacy was confirmed only af­ter the last of three series of an­nouncements on candidates wasmade. The couple submitted theirnomination forms through theirrepresentatives. .News of the battle triggered spec­ulation that a huge fight betweenthe leaders is on the cards, as theyare said to have their own sup­porters in the party.The couple's daughter, Nurul Iz­zah Anwar, said Wan Azizah wouldmake the justification for her can­didacy soon. Asked who she sup­ported, the Lembah Pantai mem­ber of parliament said: "We have 10days before the list of candidates isfinalised.­ Both of them have 10days to win my votes."Universiti Utara Malaysia polit­ical analyst Associate Professor DrMohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani be­lieves that Wan Azizah will with­draw from the race if her husbandsucceeds in overturning hissodomy conviction at the FederalCourt."I think Wan Azizah will with­draw (from the race) to allow him tobecome party president."The opposition leader (Anwar)is needed to bring a sense of pur­pose to PKR, since it has alwaysbeen known as a party for Anwar'sstruggle. Anwar is trying to set along­term agenda for his future inthe party," he told the New SundayTimes.Earlier, there were rumours thatincumbent PKR deputy presidentAzmin Ali would contest the pres­ident's post when he arrived at theparty's headquarters an hour be­fore the closing period to submithis nomination form. The GombakMP, however, said he would only bedefending his post.On why he had submitted hisnomination papers in the last hourof nomination, Azmin said he had along discussion with his colleaguesabout his political future."I also discussed with Anwar be­fore we decided that I should retainmy post."Asked if the delay was because ofhis earlier intention to contest thepresident's post, Azmin said: "Well,that is history. I have made mydecision and filed my paper."It will be a daunting task forAzmin to defend his post, with fiveaspiring candidates, including hispolitical nemesis, SelangorMenteri BesarTan Sri Abdul KhalidIbrahim, vying to become the par­ty's No. 2.The other contenders includePKR secretary­general Datuk Sai­fuddin Nasution, former PuchongPKR division chief S. Murali andDatuk K. Ramachandram, whocontested as the PKR candidate forthe Batang Kali state seat in the13th General Election.Joining the contest for thedeputy president's post is Batu MPTian Chua, who sprung a surpriseas he will also be defending hisvice­president's post.The contest for the vice­pres­idents' posts will be a crowdedrace, as it sees the participation of16 candidates, including TianChua. Also defending their vice­presidents' posts are Nurul Izzah,Padang Serai MP N. Surendran,Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh andPenang PKR chief Datuk Dr MansorOthman.Other contenders for the vice­presidents' posts include Sarawak'PKR chief Baru Bian, outgoing PKRYouth chief Shamsul Iskandar MdAkin, PKR strategy director RafiziRamli, Bukit Lanjan assemblymanElizabeth Wong, PKR supremecouncil member Yahya Shaari, SriAndalas assemblyman Dr XavierJayakumar, Perak PKR chiefMustaffa Kamil. Ayub and formerKajang state assemblyman LeeChin Cheh.A total of 78 candidates will becontesting seats in the 20­membercentral committee.The party polls will be held fromApril 25 to May 11. The results willbe announced two days later. Ad­ditional reporting by Lavanya LinganHeadline
