The Associated Students of The University of Montana 1 Resolution Regarding ADUs 2 February 13, 2013 3 SB56-12/13  4 Authored by: Eamon Ormseth, ASUM Senator 5 Sponsored by: Becca Boslough, ASUM Senator; Claire Chandler, ASUM Senator; Nicole 6 Watkins, ASUM Senator; Topher Williams, ASUM Senator; Mariah Williams, ASUM 7 Senator; Alex Rich, ASUM Senator 8  9 Whereas, an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a rental unit with a separate kitchen, sleeping 10 and bathroom facilities, attached or detached from the primary residential unit, on a single-11 family home; 12  13 Whereas, rezoning to allow for ADUs will be a helpful tool in providing additional affordable 14 housing units, ensuring more opportunities for young families to purchase homes, helping elderly 15 individuals to stay in their homes, and adding new opportunities for our building industry; 16  17 Whereas, rezoning to allow for ADUs would allow for the currently illegal ADUs to be brought 18 up to safety code. 19  20 Whereas, the vacancy rate in Missoula is approximately 3%, compared to a national average of 21 almost 10%; 22  23 Whereas, more than 10,000 students live off-campus in non-University owned rental units; 24  25 Whereas, ADUs will be owner occupied, so residents and neighbors of ADUs will not have to 26 deal with the adverse effects of having an absent landlord. 27  28 Therefore, Let It Be Resolved, that ASUM supports drafting amendments to Missoula Zoning 29 Ordinance 20.45.060, entitled ‘Accessory Dwelling Units.’ 30  31 Therefore, Let It Be Further Resolved, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Katherine 32 Brady, Director of the ASUM Off-Campus Renter Center, for entrance into the public record at 33 the next appropriate public meeting regarding ADUs. 34  35  36 Passed by Committee: _____________________________, 2013 37  38  39 Passed by ASUM Senate: __________________________, 2013 40  41  42  ________________________________   ___________________________________ 43 Damara Simpson,       Bryn Hagfors, 44 Relations and Affairs Chair    Chair of the Senate 45
