COURSE DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES DESCRIPTION: Analysis of fibers and fabrics as related to selection and use for theatrical purposes.  Basic dyeing, painting, distressing techniques that are commonly used in the industry, and the safe practices thereof.  Utilizing practical application and group critique to further students technical knowledge of textile manipulation. SCHEDULE & TOPICS: Week 1: Aug. 28 & 30 Lab safety; fiber identification; classes of dye; color theory Week 2: Sept. 4 & 6 Fiber reactive dye Week 3: Sept. 11 & 13 Fiber reactive dye; color matching Week 4: Sept. 18 & 20 Acid dye Week 5: Sept. 25 & 27 Union/household dye (Rit) Week 6: Oct. 2 & 4 Synthetic/Polyester dye (Rit DyeMore) Week 7 : Oct. 9 & 11 Silk painting Week 8 MIDTERM: Shibori; binders & projects to date due (weeks 2-7)  Oct. 16 & 18  Week 9: Oct. 23 & 25 Stamping & stenciling: fabric paints Week 10: Oct 30 & Nov 1 Digital fabric design/printing Week 11: Nov. 8 Distressing No class Nov. 6—Election Day Week 12: Nov. 13 & 15 Distressing; approval of final projects Week 13: Nov. 20 Low Immersion/Ice Dyeing; binders & projects to date due (weeks 8-No class Nov. 22--Thanksgiving 12) Week 14: Nov. 27 & 29 Work on final project Week 15 : Dec. 4 & 6 Work on final project FINALS WEEK Final project & binders due **Schedule and topics are subject to change.      2  OBJECTIVES • To learn to accurately identify fabrics and fibers, and the techniques/processes appropriate for use with each fabric type • To learn safe practices of textile modification techniques commonly used in the theatre including dyeing, painting, and distressing. • To develop the skills needed to design & create custom textiles through traditional and digital methods  RECOMMENDED TEXT Fabric Painting & Dyeing for the Theatre by Deborah M. Dryden  As this book has gone out of print, it can be cost prohibitive & difficult to obtain, therefore it is not required.  There are copies available in the shop for your use.  These copies are to be considered as reference materials and must remain in the costume shop.  CLASS WEBSITE / MOODLE All hand-outs distributed in class as well as supplemental material will also be available on Moodle.  Any changes to schedule and/or assignment due dates will also be updated on Moodle.  When in doubt, use the information on Moodle as your guide.   SUPPLIES 3-ring 3” binder with divider tabs Notebook for dye recipes & calculations Extra-Fine point Sharpie Writing utensils 2 yd. of white Kona cotton Calculator  1-2 bottles of Rit DyeMore (different colors) Resist items for Shibori (OPTIONAL, resist items will be provided, but if you want to try something different, you are welcome!) T-shirt to ice dye (OPTIONAL, this will be discussed closer to Week 7) Watercolor paper (OPTIONAL.  You may consider sharing a pack/pad with classmates) Article of clothing to distress (this will be discussed in the second half of the semester)  CELL PHONES You may use the calculator on your phone.  However, as we will be working around water, chemicals, and you will be wearing protective gloves, a traditional calculator is recommended.  You are also encouraged to take process photos for your binder and portfolios. If you prefer to take notes on your phone, or record lectures, inform the instructor-- otherwise your phone is expected to be stowed for the duration of class.  If you are observed using your phone for anything other than the above functions you will be asked to stow your phone the first time.  Second and subsequent violations of this policy will result in the confiscation of your phone for the remainder of the class period.   ATTENDANCE As this is a lab-based class, a substantial portion of your grade is based on attendance. Time-management is also an important factor to many of the processes we will be using, therefore punctuality is also important.  Three tardies will equate to an unexcused absence.  Three unexcused absences will automatically drop your grade by one letter.  Each subsequent unexcused absence will 3  continue to drop your grade by one letter per absence.  If you will be absent or late to class due to illness or serious emergency, please inform the instructor via University email as soon as possible.  A doctor’s note or other equivalent documentation must be provided to the instructor within a week of absence for the absence to be excused.   If you are absent due to illness, it is your responsibility to contact the professor regarding missed work and/or ask your classmates what was covered that day.  Students are responsible for making arrangements to come in during the professor’s office hours if they wish to go over missed work.  Students are expected to be responsible for their own education. Any effort made to make up for missed work must be made by the student in their own time.    WORK TIME & LAB ACCESS This course has been designed so the majority of the assigned projects can be completed during allotted class/lab time, however some time outside of class may be required (dependent on class size and quantity of supplies, etc.).  Access to the dye lab outside of class time must be arranged with the instructor and/or the costume shop manager, Paula Niccum.      GRADING & ASSESSMENT ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION: 50% As previously stated, this is a lab-based class where students are expected to be present at all classes (lecture and lab/work time) and work to their fullest potential.  Your attendance will be recorded in Moodle, and you may check it at any time. ASSIGNMENTS/PROJECTS: 25% All projects are due by 5 pm on the dates described in the syllabus.  No late projects will be accepted.  Failure to turn in projects on the assigned date will adversely affect your grade.  Each project will have its own grading rubric that will be described at the time of assignment. BINDER: 10% As we do not have a formal textbook for this course, your binder will act as your text as well as a reference for you after this class.  Binders must be neatly organized and contain all hand-outs and your completed project write-ups.  Process photos of your projects are also encouraged. FINAL PROJECT: 15% There will be no opportunities for extra credit in this class.  INSTRUCTOR EXPECTATIONS OF CONDUCT DYE LAB SAFETY Many fabric modification techniques involve the use of hazardous chemicals and/or chemical processes.  For the health & safety of all students and staff, all safety protocols and lab rules must be followed as outlined in the Dye Lab Student Safety Contract.  Failure to adhere to the safety contract will result in removal from the dye lab and/or reduction in grade, as outlined in the contract.   LANGUAGE & CONDUCT All students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner, such as they would at a job.  Please conduct yourself in a respectful and professional manner.  If you are in any way 4  actively disturbing other students and getting in the way of their education, you will be asked to leave by the instructor.   CONVERSATION & PRODUCTIVITY As a lab class, there will be opportunities to talk while working on projects.  Students are expected to be proactive about their work and self-monitoring of their time.  Please be aware of the volume and topic of your conversations.  If you are distracting yourself or your classmates, or if the topic is unsuitable for a work environment, the instructor reserves the right to ask the student(s) to work quietly, change the topic, or take the conversation outside in order to facilitate a productive working environment.    If you are working outside the dye lab you may listen to music/podcasts, etc.  For safety purposes, only one earbud/headphone may be utilized.  Volume must be kept to a level where you can hear the instructor or others speaking to you in a normal voice.  If you are distracting yourself or your classmates, the instructor reserves the right to ask you to stop and put away your device.  At no time is listening to music/podcasts permissible inside the dye lab.   HYGENE/PERSONAL CARE & DRESS CODE The costume shop at UM is a professional work place and consequently the expectations of conduct follow those of the industry. Please avoid wearing perfume or other strong scents. The costume shop is a confined space with very little ventilation and we need to be respectful of our peers and colleagues.  If you have a cough or running nose, please wash your hands regularly.  Many of the tools used in the shop are for common use on a daily basis and colds spread quickly in this space.  If the instructor observes a problem that puts others health at risk you may be asked to either leave or take appropriate cautionary measures.    Please wear clothing that you can work in comfortably and appropriately. You may be asked to work on the floor, climb on the table, climb ladders etc. and clothing worn to class should accommodate accordingly.   When working in the dye lab, clothing must adhere to the guidelines set in the Dye Lab Student Safety Contract.  Again, the costume shop is a professional shop, please dress accordingly.    Academic Misconduct and the Student Conduct Code All students must practice academic honesty.  Academic misconduct is subject to an academic penalty by the course instructor and/or disciplinary sanction by the University.  All students need to be familiar with the Student Conduct Code.  The Code is available for review online at http://www.umt.edu/vpsa/policies/student_conduct.php.      All Theatre & Dance students must have an in-depth knowledge of the practices and procedures outlined in the School of Theatre & Dance Student Handbook. The Handbook is available online at http://www.umt.edu/umarts/theatredance/About/handbook.php.   There is inherent risk involved in many Theatre & Dance classes as they are very physical in nature. Please proceed through class, shop time, or rehearsal with caution. Always be mindful of your personal safety and the safety of others. Students participating in class/shop/rehearsal/performance do so at their own risk. 5   Due to safety considerations, at no point during a student’s time spent in class or serving on a production (in any capacity) should non-enrolled persons be guests of that student without my consent. Presence of such unauthorized persons in a class, shop, or any backstage/off-stage area will negatively affect a student’s grade.  Students with Special Needs Students with disabilities may request reasonable modifications by contacting me.
