The Associated Students of the University of Montana 1 Resolution Regarding COT West Campus 2 March 9, 2011 3 Senate Bill SB22-10/11 4 Authored by: Austin James and Lucas Berry, ASUM Senators 5 Sponsored by: Dylan Klapmeier, ASUM Senator 6  7  8 Whereas it is essential that the students of The University of Montana are ensured safety 9 in the learning environment; 10  11 Whereas not all of the current welding lab exhaust vents are in a properly working state at 12 The University of Montana College of Technology West Campus; 13  14 Whereas the exhaust vents are crucial to preventing the build up of Hexavalent 15 Chromium welding fumes which poses a serious threats to COT students such as 16 increased risks of lung cancer, asthma, nasal septum ulcerations and perforations, skin 17 ulcerations (chrome holes) and allergic and irritant contact dermatitis; 18  19 Whereas on February 28, 2006 the Occupational Safety and Health Administration issues 20 a new standards related to exposure of hexavalent chromium lowering the permissible 21 exposure limit from 52 to five micrograms due to exposure being so harmful; 22  23 Whereas the two ways to extract these harmful fumes from the breathing zone, (a) fume 24 extraction directly on the welding gun or torch and (b) source capture using a dust or 25 fume collection device; 26  27 Whereas the COT West Campus currently has a source capturing device but it is 28 currently dysfunctional; 29   30 Therefore, Let It Be Resolved the Associated Students of The University of Montana 31 advocate the administration of the COT West Campus University of Montana fix the 32 source capturing device to ensure student air quality for students.  33  34  35 Passed by the Committee:_____________________, 2011 36  37 Passed by the ASUM Senate:_____________________, 2011 38  39  40  41 _____________________________  ________________________________ 42 Travis Suzuki,     Amanda Stovall, 43 Relations and Affairs Chair   Chair of the Senate 44
