The Associated Students of the University of Montana 1 Resolution Regarding MontPIRG 2 April 14, 2010 3 Senate Bill Number SB28-09/10 4 Authored by: Alison Kilts, ASUM Senator, John Wilke, ASUM Senator  5 And Jared Trilling, Board Chair of Students for MontPIRG 6 Sponsored by: Ashleen Williams, Ray Davis, Lucas Berry, Casey Smartt,  7 Aleta Joksich, Amanda Summers, Casey Linane-Booey  8 and Patrick Rhea, ASUM Senators; and Matt Fennell, ASUM President 9  10 Whereas, over 2,500 students (approximately 20% of the student population) have signed 11 a petition in support of the MontPIRG fee being placed on the spring ASUM ballot; 12  13 Whereas, the ASUM bylaws require the signatures of 5% of the student population in 14 support of a fee for that fee to be placed on the ballot; 15  16 Therefore, Let It Be Resolved that ASUM will place the question of a $5.00 refundable 17 fee to be placed on the ballot this spring for the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 academic 18 years; 19  20 Let It Be Further Resolved that the ballot language will read as follows: 21  22 “MontPIRG (Montana Public Interest Research Group) is a statewide, student directed, 23 non-profit, non-partisan advocacy organization. MontPIRG exists to articulate and pursue 24 through the media, the institutions of government, research, the courts, and other legal 25 means the concerns of students on issues of general public interests. These issues include, 26 but are not limited to college affordability, protecting the environment, alleviating hunger 27 and homelessness, increasing public transportation and consumer protection.  MontPIRG 28 empowers students by pools ing their student resources to hire professional staff that 29 works with students, giving themselves the skills, knowledge and presence needed to 30 make meaningful and lasting change. to teach skills in community organizing. 31  32 Do you support the funding of a MontPIRG chapter at the University of Montana through 33 a $5 per student, per semester refundable fee? Any student not wanting to pay the fee can 34 get a refund.” 35  36 You are voting whether or not you support the funding of a MontPIRG chapter at the 37 University of Montana through a $5 per student, per semester refundable fee.
