Professor Balfour Jeffrey   PSYCHOLOGY 335   Fall Semester 2001  Fundamentals of Clinical Psychology  Class:  MWF, 1:10-2:00,  JOUR 304  Office:  SB 310, Office Phone 243-5664, Home Phone 543-7941  Office Hours: Mon., Tues., Thur. 3:00-4:00; after class; and by appointment.  Course Objectives:  A. Knowledge Bases:  The purpose of this course is to provide an overview to the field of clinical psychology.  Students will be expected to be familiar with the history of clinical psychology, and the different theoretical approaches.  They will learn about the principles of assessment and the different evaluation methods (interviewing, tests, observations).  They will become acquainted with the different methods of therapy (individual, group, couples, family) and the different theoretical perspectives of therapy.  Students will become familiar with the application of clinical psychology to the areas of children, health, neuropsychology and forensics.  They will also learn about professional issues.  B. Skills:  Students will be expected to analyze, discuss and apply the knowledge bases of clinical psychology to a variety of clinical psychology issues and problems.  This course is intended for advanced undergraduates who are considering a career in clinical psychology or human services.    Required Readings: Nietzel, N.T., Bernstein, D.A., & Milich, R. (1998) Introduction to Clinical Psychology.  Upper Saddler River, N.J.  (5th Ed) Prentice Hall.  Additional readings will be assigned on specific topics.  Recommended Readings: American Psychiatric Association, Diagnostic & Statistical Manual, IV Edition (1994)  American Psychological Association, 1985.  Standards for Educational & Psychological Tests and  Manuals: Washington DC, Author  American Psychological Association.  Ethical principles of psychologists and code of conduct.  American Psychologists, 1992, 47, 1597-1611.  Evaluation: 1. Students are responsible for all class lectures, presentations, films, discussions, and required readings. 2. There will be three (3) exams and a final exam.  Exams will be all multiple choice or a combination of multiple choice and essay. 3. In general, there will be no make-up exams.  If you do not take an exam, you will receive zero points for that exam. 4. Bring to exams a clean, flat, unfolded NCS Form and a #2 pencil. 5. Total points will determine a student’s final grade (90%=A, 80%=B, 70%=C, 60%=D, 59%<F). 6. Your highest 3 exams will be counted for your final grade.  You can throw out your lowest exam, or elect to not take the final if you are satisfied with your grade.   7. No early Final Exam will be administered.
