FALL 2017 – Analytical Techniques I, Section 50 (74821, MUSI 554, 50) Online Course  Instructor:   Dr. Zachary Cooper Office:   Music Building #012 E-mail:  zachary.cooper@umontana.edu Office Hours:  by appointment  Introduction This is the first semester of a two-semester analytical techniques sequence for graduate music students at the University of Montana School of Music.  Analytical Techniques I and II explore various types of analysis necessary for the study of music from ca. 800 AD to the present.  You will be required to post in online forums, listen to recordings, study manuscripts and scores, and analyze music on the score and in prose.  Course Objectives By the end of the semester, you should be able to:  Analyze and discuss Western art music from the Medieval through Baroque Eras, including: o Monophonic Chant o Organum duplum o Early Polyphonic works o Isorhythmic motets o Formes Fixes o Baroque instrumental genres o Fugues  Use SHMRG analysis to analyze a work from any era  Apply newly learned analytical techniques to works outside the scope of this course  Required Text & Materials TEXT: No text required.  MOODLE:  This course uses Moodle to provide important information regarding assignments,             grades, and supplementary materials.  To access Moodle:  https://moodle.umt.edu/  ONLINE RESOURCES:    Before you begin, you will want to be sure you can log-in to the Maureen and Mike  Mansfield Library (www.lib.umt.edu) for access to online resources posted in Moodle.   For example, terminology links on Moodle will direct you to Oxford Music Online,  which you may not be able to access without first logging in.  Tentative Grading System Assignments 1-11 (omitting Assignment 8)    80%  This means that each assignment is approx. 8% of your final grade. Assignment 8 (5-6 page paper)     20%   ***It is university policy that students must check their university e-mail DAILY***  Class Participation Online class participation is expected and noted for final grade calculation.  Missed assignments will have an impact on the final grade.  Missed assignments cannot be made up without prior approval from the instructor. For more information, please visit the Disability Services website at http://life.umt.edu/dss    TENTATIVE COURSE SCHEDULE  DATE CLASS TOPIC ASSIGNMENT DUE WEEK 1 Understanding Medieval Chant This week we will learn about reading and singing chant and also read an article regarding how technology is helping musicologists to codify chant. 1) Go to the ACTIVITY link and complete lessons 1 through 5 2) Read the article under READING 3) Click the ASSIGNMENT 1 link and read the PDF 4) Follow PDF instructions and post in the NEUMES forum 5) Follow PDF instructions and post in the TECHNOLOGY AND CHANT forum Friday  Sept. 8  at  11:59 p.m. 31-Aug thru 8-Sep WEEK 2 Transcribing Chant to Modern Notation This week we will transcribe an introit "Puer natus est nobis" into modern notation using what you have learned in week 1.  You may wish to use the article under REFERENCE to find examples of neume transcriptions or even transcribe by ear from the YouTube video under LISTENING.  It is highly suggested to read "Terminology - History of Western Notation" 1) Open the MANUSCRIPT of Puer natus est 2) Listen while following the manuscript  (click link under LISTENING) 3) Click the ASSIGNMENT 2 link and read the PDF  4)  TRANSCRIBE the manuscript to modern notation 5) Submit your assignment  Friday  Sept. 15  at  11:59 p.m. 9-Sep thru 15-Sep WEEK 3 Analyzing Chant This week we will learn the underlying rules of monophonic chant.  To enhance our understanding, we will also compose new lines of chant in the same style and then analyze it to see how successful we are. 1)  Click the ASSIGNMENT 3 link and read the PDF. Your answers will also go on this PDF, so you may wish to print it.2)  Complete Parts 1, 2, and 3 on the PDF3) Submit your assignment FridaySept. 29at11:59 p.m. 23-Sep thru 29-Sep       WEEK 5 From Organum to Polyphony This week we will analyze polyphonic music using the techniques we have learned from monophonic chant and duplum and adding a few more regarding harmonic analysis and rhythm. 1)  Click the ASSIGNMENT 5 link and read the PDF.   Your answers will also go on this PDF,  so you may wish to print it. 2)  Complete the Analysis and Guided Questions 3) Submit your assignment Friday Oct. 6 at 11:59 p.m. 30-Sep thru 6-Oct WEEK 6 Isorhythm, Color, and Talea This week we will focus on isorhythm, learn a little more about Machaut and last week's Kyrie, look at a work by De Vitry, In arboris, and the underlying principles of the Ars Nova, and explore color and talea. 1)  Read the powerpoint presentation under ACTIVITY 2)  Read principles of the Ars Novaunder READING 3)  LISTEN to In arboris and follow the score on YouTube 4)  Read the PDF "TaleaandColorSCHENKMAN" under READING 5)  Assignment 6:  Post in the forum following the PDF instructions Friday Oct. 13 at 11:59 p.m. 7-Oct thru 13-Oct WEEK 7 Writing about Early Music This week wraps up our journey from monophonic chant through early polyphony.  You will have to write a post in the forum regarding aspects of polyphonic music using the techniques for analysis that we have learned through the last 6 weeks of assignments. Plan ahead!  MMEA conference is this weekend!   Due date moved to Sunday  1)  Click the ASSIGNMENT 7 link and read the PDF.   2) Open the music by clicking Kyrie under SCORE 3)  Listen to the Kyrie by following the link under LISTENING 4) Post in the forum following the PDF instructions. **Sunday** Oct. 22 at  11:59 p.m. 14-Oct thru 20-Oct WEEK 8 Formes Fixes This week is a self-guided exploration of the Formes Fixes.  This may be a review for you or it might be new information.  Enjoy exploring the music and listening to the YouTube videos.  This review will aide in your preparation for your paper in the coming weeks. 1)  Read the powerpoint presentation and visit the website link under ACTIVITY 2)  Listen to the YouTube links under LISTENING or other recordings that you find online at your leisure 3)  NO SUBMITTED ASSIGNMENT THIS WEEK  :)  N/A 21-Oct thru 27-Oct WEEK 9 SHMRG Analysis This week we will learn about SHMRG analysis and apply it to a Renaissance work of your choosing from the Formes Fixes.  You 1) Read "What is SHMRG?" under READING2) Click the ASSIGNMENT 8 link and read the PDF3) Write a 5-6 page paper using SHMRG analysis4)  Submit your paper on Moodle Friday Nov. 10 at11:59 p.m. 28-Oct thru 3-Nov WEEK 10 will write a 5-6 page paper regarding your original SHMRG analysis. 4-Nov thru 10-Nov WEEK 11 Baroque Instrumental Genres This week will be a review of instrumental genres from the Baroque.
