Hansen, School of ForestryPlhansen@forestry.umt.edu Forestry Building, Room 204,243-2050 Office Hours: Monday 3-5; W ednesday 3-5; TBATEACHING ASSISTANT:COURSE OBJECTIVE:1) Increase students awareness of the importance of riparian and wetland areas and the complexities associated with their management.2) Provide students w ith information pertaining to the vegetation, hydrology, geomorphology, soils, site classification, and management associated with riparian and wetland areas.3) Provide multiple use training that can be used by students to manage riparian and wetland areas for the short- and long-term benefits.4) Introduce students to a variety of management issues by bringing in outside guest lecturers from a variety of agencies and organizations.REQUIRED BOOK: Classification and Management of Montana's Riparian and Wetland Sites byHansen and others 1995.REQUIRED READINGS: As assigned in class.FIELD TRIPS: One 3 /4  day Saturday field trip; September 30.COURSE GRADING: Number of class meeting periods = 14. Grading will be based on the following:1) Two Exams (2/3 of total grade)A) October 18B) December 62) Final Paper (1/3 of total grade)A) Undergraduate = 10-12 pagesB) Graduate = 18-24 pages3) Class attendance4) Class participation/discussionF 3 8 9  — RIPARIAN AND WETLAND MANAGEMENTPaper OutlineYou are currently working for a private consulting firm. An individual has just bought a property containing over 120,000 acres. You have been asked to develop a comprehensive integrated riparian and wetland management plan for the property. The outline of the riparian and wetland management plan MUST  include the following information:1) Title2) Table of contents3) Introductiona) Discuss the benefits of a healthy riparian zone.b) Discuss and list the goals and objectives (5 W's) for the property.c) Describe the type of management change suggested by the consulting firm for the property.4) Physical setting of the areaa) Physiography (outward appearance) and geologyb) Climate5) Discussion of the proposed management change as it affects six out of the eight riparian and wetland topics (see below).6) Summary7) Glossary of terms and concepts (e.g., definitions)8) Literature cited (N O T  a bibliography)9) Appendix with map of the property (including a legend)Within the paper, you will choose six out o f eight  of the following RIPARIAN AND  WETLAND TOPICS  and explain the impacts caused by your proposed management plan. Remember  —  w hat occurs on the uplands has an impact on the riparian and wetlands.1) Soil2) Livestock3) Timber4) Wildlife5) Fisheries6) Recreational uses and considerations7) Watershed (hydrology) e.g., water quality, water quantity, etc.8) VegetationLength of Paper1) Undergraduate = 10-12 pages2) Graduate = 18-24 pagesEach student is to do their own paper. This is not a group project.NOTE: The graduate students will be given a data set to analyze and write-up for their report.
