This course has several significant learning outcomes:1. Prepare the student to  perform  careful, reproducible and accurate laboratory work: Im portan t practical skills tha t the student w ill u ltim ate ly need in order to  perform  well in any laboratory environm ent.2. Develop skills to  analyze and evaluate experim ental data.3. However, the exams and final are challenging and can impact your grade. The hom ework, exams and final w ill focus on the more fundam ental material presented in the lecture. We cover about 11 Chapters in Harvey, so keep up on the reading and do relevant hom ework problems or your1exam /final grades w ill suffer. Grades w ill be curved but grade cutoffs are usually close to  the trad itiona l ranges. The plus/m inus system o f grading w ill be used.Laboratory notebook and reports: A bound laboratory notebook w ith  page numbers is required. You MUST have and use your lab notebook for all labs. Separate laboratory reports w ill be subm itted fo r each lab. A detailed description o f the laboratory notebook and report fo rm a t is provided elsewhere. All laboratory reports are to  be subm itted on M oodle and are due on the Wednesday fo llow ing the final day o f the experim ent. Lab report grades w ill be reduced by 10%/day if they are late and w ill only be accepted up to  5 days a fte r the due date (except in cases o f illness or fam ily emergency, explained p rio r to  the deadline if possible).Other: Safety goggles are required fo r this course and must be worn at all times. You w ill be working w ith  strong acids and bases which can cause irreversible loss o f eyesight and significant scarring. A lab coat is also recommended fo r those who wish to  keep the ir clothing from  mysteriously acquiring holes. Students are expected to  adhere to  the lab schedule. Lab make-ups w ill not be possible due to  the lim ited availab ility o f the lab. There is more than enough tim e devoted to  each experim ent and we are not responsible fo r poor tim e usage on your part.Academic misconduct is subject to  an academic penalty by the course instructor and /o r disciplinary sanction by the University.
