The second annual Volunteer of the Year awardalso will be presented.According to Marianne Fortescue, student life programassistant, student service organizations have beeninvited to display highlights of their service efforts.More than 700 students are involved in more than 20service-related organizations from Alternative BreakChallenge to the Great Bay Kids Club and Circle K.Recently, members of the UNH chapter of Circle Kattended the annual district convention along with theother 20 clubs in New England, and came back toDurham with 13 awards.Ten groups of ten students each just returned fromAlternative Break Challenge (ABC), after traveling todifferent states around the country working withHabitat for Humanity to construct homes for thedisadvantaged. "There are some awesome students outthere doing amazing work," Fortescue says, "and thereception is designed to recognize their achievements."Two weeks ago, Fortescue brought together more than20 area community agencies at UNH for an all-daysymposium with the faculty, staff and student groupswith which they work.Sponsored by UNH's Partnership for Social Action and12/4/17, 11(51 AMUNH Student Volunteers Are Honored at Recognition CeremonyPage 2 of 2http://www.unh.edu/delete/news/news_releases/2000/april/kb_20000407volunteers.htmlCampus Compact for New Hampshire (CCNH), theevent was designed to bring together "the stakeholdersto discuss the context and mission ofcampus/community collaborations," according toFortescue.The partnership office, housed in Student Affairs,matches campus groups interested in public servicewith area agencies. CCNH is a consortium of 23colleges and universities committed to service,citizenship and community collaboration.Area community agencies that attended include AIDSResponse Seacoast, Dover Housing Authority, SeacoastOutright, the Family Support Center in Dover, and theRochester and Farmington School Districts.Funded in part by the Ford Foundation, the symposium"brought together more formally the faculty and othercampus groups with the agencies we work with,"explains Fortescue. "The partnerships we have withcommunity groups are strong, but we also know ourcollaborations can lead to even greater social changeand community revitalization." April 7, 2000Back to unh.edu.
