Abstract

The Enlightenment was a social and intellectual movement of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It was characterized by scepticism about authority and respect for the power of reason. Unsurprisingly, it resulted in a series of conflicts with religious authorities, particularly with the Catholic Church, and a reconceptualization of the understanding of God
