Hätte man mir meine Angst nicht so angemerkt, wären mir bestimmte extreme Dinge dann nicht passiert? Aber man ist so wie man ist. Vielleicht spielt eine Rolle, daß ich eine Frau bin. Das schlimmste war der Rufmord, daß die Staatssicherheit über mich schweinische Gerüchte verbreiten ließ. Wenn man das mit einem Mann macht, ist es was anderes als wenn du 'ne Frau bist. Das war eigentlich das allerschlimmste, schlimmer als die Überfälle; dieser Versuch, mich zu verleumden, um mich in die Isolation zu drängen. Plonien: Wie ist so etwas vor sich gegangen mit den Verleumdungen? Eckart: Wenn zum Beispiel auf einer Parteiversammlung jemand efragt hat -- mir erzählten das viele Leute — warum wurde denn der Gabriele Eckart ihr Buch verboten?, dann fiel die Ant-wort überall gleich aus: Ach, die Eckart! Na, da laßt euch über die mal was erzählen! Und dann kam von erstens bis zehntens, immer in der gleichen Reihenfolge, diese Gerüchte. Bis sie endlich die Spatzen von den Dächern pfiffen. Plonien: Du arbeitest seit einiger Zeit hier in den USA an deinem Amerikabuch. Du hast es angefangen, als die Verhältnisse in der DDR noch stabil waren. Mit all den Veränderungen, ändert sich jetzt auch etwas für dein Amerikabuch? Oder wirst du das so zu Ende bringen, wie du es anfangs geplant hast? Eckart: Ich bin jetzt verunsichert. Das wird natürlich nicht nur ein Amerikabuch. Ich messe ständig Amerika an der DDR und vergleiche. Ein Drittel des Texts bis jetzt handelt von der DDR. Aber ich merke schon, bestimmte satirische Anspielungen, die ich mache über die DDR, die würde man in ein paar Jahren schon nicht mehr verstehen, jetzt nach diesen Änderungen. Ich muß sehen, daß ich eine neue Reflexionsebene in das Buch einbringe, eine, die diese Veränderungen miteinbegreift. Ich untersuche --und das ist eigentlich das Spannendste bis jetzt — wie der Blick sich ändert, wie der Blick auf Amerika sich ändert, der am Anfang natürlich sehr exotisch war für einen, der als DDR-Bürger nie reisen durfte, und wie der Blick nun allmählich nüchterner und konkreter, genauer wird und auch anders. Aber wie nicht nur der Blick auf Amerika sich ändert im Laufe der Zeit, sondern, durch die Distanz, auch der Blick zurück auf die DDR. Wie ich sogar manchmal Dinge, die ich zuvor nicht schätzen konnte, weil meine DDR-Erfahrung durch diese Fixation auf die Staatssicherheit in gewisser Weise verstellt war; wie ich nun bestimmte Dinge an der DDR durch das Amerikaerlebnis schät-zen lerne. Und dieser Blick zurück auf die DDR ist natürlich jetzt problematisch geworden, weil es jetzt zwei verschiedene "DDRen" sind, über die ich reflektieren muß: Die alte DDR, die, die meinen Erfahrungen entspricht, und die neue DDR, mit der ich keine Erfahrungen habe. Plonien: Zum Schluß vielleicht dann noch mal zurück zur Poli-tik. Wie reagierst du auf die Forderungen der Bundesregierung, die ja nun massiv Einfluß auf die Entwicklung in der DDR zu neh-men versucht, indem sie sagt, "Ihr bekommt nur Geld, wenn das und das gemacht wird?" Eckart: In gewisser Weise versteh' ich das. Man kann nicht, wie bisher, den Herrschenden — und das ist immer noch die SED. wenn sie jetzt auch PDS heißt, -- einfach Milliarden Mark geben, ohne zu kontrollieren, was mit dem Geld gemacht wird. Die könn-ten ja, wenn sie die Wahl im März gewinnen, 'ne neue Staatssicherheit damit aufbauen. Ich würde schon, wenn ich an Stelle der Bundesregierung wäre, jetzt sofort helfen, Geld geben, aber ganz genau kontrollieren, was damit geschieht. Zum Beispiel braucht die DDR sofort Mittel zur Bewältigung der ökologischen Krise. Die müssen ihre Braunkohlekraftwerke end-lich schließen, dazu brauchen sie neue Energiequellen. Da müßte die Bundesrepublik unmittelbar helfen, sonst erstickt die DDR-Bevölkerung. A n n Arbor. Mich igan . 10 February 1990. I will risk a generalization: artists in the GDR—visual and ver-bal artists alike—are regarded as a generating source for social change. Not only is this the official dictum of a centralized cul-ture, it is what the audience expects. Several years ago. I was taking a summer course on German Studies in Greifswald, near the Polish border. I was attracted by the landscape I knew from the paintings of Casper David Friedrich: the marketplace, the Wicker Bay. the green meadows and the ancient ruins of the cloister Edda. I remember most the silver water pipes that ran through the low. blond fields dotted with pale orange poppies and grazing cattle. The pipes, I later learned, ran from the nuclear power plant in Lubmin to the cities and suburbs, Satellitenstädte, the pipes I would see again in contemporary art: a slide of the low landscape in harsh light and silver lining. On a humid afternoon in July we collected in a university room for a slide presentation on GDR art. The speaker, a professor of art history at the university, talked about the relationship between art and society. He explained the theoretical development of GDR art, which, he conceded, was centralized as well as subsidized. He talked about eventual diversity, of theme and style, to be found in contemporary artists (attested to, incidentally, by this particu-lar exhibit), responsibility. He neatly rehearsed the history of art— from the dogmatism of the 40s and 50s with its socialist realist glorifications of the New Man, the stress on the collective over the individual, the visionary industrial landscape; to the sixties and the "second generation" influenced by the work of Otto Dix. He talked about the Bitterfelder Weg, the impulse to encourage workers to write about their working life, which produced such cliches as the "boy wants tractor-boy gets tractor" genre, but poets as acute and articulate as Wolfgang Hilbig. With equal mea-sures of alacrity and sincerity, this man spoke of the contrast between abstract, elitist, commercial art in the Bundesrepublik vs. the ideologically motivated products of socialist realism, which were close to the experience of the people, the reality of the workers. For him, the term "ideological" had no pejorative connotations. He came to the plurality of the sixties and seventies, the cita-tional tendencies in both art and literature: the reexamination of the individual, so-called "new subjectivity," and the use of alle-gory and myth for social and political commentary, usually of a critical nature. He talked about renaissance iconography, manner-ism, surrealist tendencies, the introduction of religious themes, and his comments were full not of dismissive remarks about bour-geois art, but of praise for art that is aware of its context. He talked on about the rehabilitation of Romanticism, once rejected for its dark side and obsessive and rampant subjectivity; and of Expres-sionism. He finally insisted that there was something called the dialectical relationship between the artist and the audience. We sat in the dark and asked questions. After seeing 75 slides of industrial landscapes, workers at work and at rest, lunar land-scapes that were called "Vietnam after America," I asked about a kind of art conspicuously absent. What about Cezanne? What did he think about Cezanne? The pro-fessor said: "It's not that art can't be beautiful, but it has to mean something. It has to have social relevance. Without it, art has no meaning." I had my answer. Years later, I heard a friend from the independent peace move-ment say nearly the same thing, about the names we know, about the work of Heiner Müller, even Christa Wolf. "I don't know. I guess it's good, but it has no meaning. They don't take any risks or speak for anyone but themselves. I guess it's good, but it's not political." Something had happened: art was losing, it seemed, its audience by no longer speaking for or to contemporary issues. Art of a certain kind was becoming irrelevant because it didn't look like life. The question of realism, not only socialist realism, exerts a cer-tain kind of pressure on the discourse about art and culture in general in the GDR. Perhaps because there is—or, up until very recently, has been—a close relationship between theory and praxis, between the artist and the audience, a relationship defined as everything from "dialectical" to "didactic." The essential questions persist: how does art produce meaning? what is the nature of the subject-object relationship? what is the relationship between the means of production and the production of meaning? [...jDuring the 1980s, the relationship between the artist and the audience began to change. With the growth of the independent peace movement, the heightening of an ecological consciousness, and the coming of age of a generation "born into" socialism came a growing dissatisfaction with the established culture, which, to be fair, underwent significant changes and tolerated a greater level of political, if encoded, criticism. Younger poets in greater numbers published in the West; samizdat newspapers were foun-ded in East Berlin, and eventually, in Dresden and Leipzig. Two independent theater groups were founded in the 80s—one, Zinno-ber, which began as a puppet theater and has expanded its repertory to include performance art pieces, still operates from a storefront in Prenzlauer Berg. The group aims at crossing thresh-olds, literally and figuratively; they have no director, they improvise, and call themselves political "conscientious objec-tors. " At one point, the Akademie der Künste intervened on behalf of the group. It was allowed, thanks to the Akademie, to perform in the West. A sculptor, who lived for several years under house arrest, made a political statement in his choice of material. With "vital-ien," hay. pieces of driftwood, scraps of metal found around his family farm, he created "biodegradable" art and called it Vom Midi Zuriick-back from the trash. Engineers by day turned into performance artists at night for surreal, dadaist evenings of text and music. Poets read in crowded cafes while photographers with their own eyes toward realism took pictures of the rock riots, urban decay, the first dead tree on the Boulevard Unter den Lin-den. And they expected the established representatives of GDR culture to take risks, to speak to their causes and engage them in discourse. Instead, they spoke for themselves. The common denominator in the performance art and the self-circulating literature of the 80s is not. as one might expect, an attack, an attempt to change an overarching and (seemingly) insurmountable power structure, but to change the individual. Over and over I read the lines "to live 'as if" or "to teach myself not to be afraid." Art. to speak with Panofsky. functions as docu-ment. If canonized, it remains, or travels. Someone takes care of it. As witnesses, as observers, we. too, are curators of a culture we are just beginning to discover. What is exciting about the past, the diversity, the courage visible in this exhibit, can only be rejuve-nated by the new possibilities of dialogue between official culture in the GDR and the emergence of the alternative arts. BOOK REVIEWS Bartusch, Hagen und Ute Scheffler, eds. Die zweite Beschreibung meiner Freunde - DDR-Prosa der 70er und 80er Jahre. Halle/ Leipzig: Mitteldeutscher Verlag, 1989. 406 S. Diese Anthologie vereint siebenunddreißig größtenteils bereits veröffentlichte Texte von ebensovielen DDR-Autoren aus dem Zeitraum etwa der letzten fünfzehn Jahre. Die Texte sind zwei bis achtundzwanzig Seiten lang. Ein "Nachwort" der Herausgeber. "Bibliographische Angaben" und ein "Quellennachweis" schlie-ßen die Sammlung ab. In diesem Band sind keine abgeschlossenen Texte mit fertigen Lösungen zu finden; vielmehr regen die Autoren zur Nachdenklichkeit und zur kritischen Auseinandersetzung an. Das ist sicher ein selbstverständliches Anliegen von Literatur, doch nicht unbedingt das Anliegen einer Literatur, die sich erst ab Mitte der 60er Jahre langsam vom Primat des sozialistischen Realismus emanzipierte und deren Autoren erst dann anfingen, eine Rolle als Partner eines mündigen Lesers in der Bewältigung gemeinsamer Probleme wahrzunehmen. Schon die Erzählung von Fritz Rudolf Fries, die der Anthologie den Titel verleiht, macht diese Entwicklung deutlich. Man fragt sich, ob der Autor auch eine "erste" Beschreibung seiner Freunde verfaßt hat, und diese gibt es in der Tat ("Beschreibung meiner Freunde" in Der Fernsehkrieg, 1969). Dort bildet die zweite Beschreibung derselben Freunde bereits den zweiten Teil der Erzählung und erschien 1978 zum erstenmal als selbstständige Erzählung (in Der Seeweg nach Indien). Im Gegensatz zur ersten Beschreibung spielen Ideale in der zweiten kaum noch eine Rolle im Alltag der Freunde. Man hat es sich bequem gemacht und gibt sich einer kleinbürgerlichen Vorstellungswelt hin, in der die neue Wohnung und die neue Wohnungseinrichtung im Mittelpunkt stehen, Erfolg aus der Erfüllung von privaten Zielen besteht und in der die Politik ausgespart bleibt. Es kommt auch gar kein rich-tiges Gespräch mehr zustande. Die fehlende Lebensfülle empfindet der Leser als Verlust. Die Trennung zwischen der eigenen Sphäre und der großen Welt wird auch kritisch in Heinz Czechowskis "Bei mir und dort" thematisiert. In den Texten von Stephan Hermlin. Werner Brückner und Eli-sabeth Schulz-Semrau werden die Vorbedingungen und die schwierige Anfangspha.se der DDR beleuchtet und befragt. Uwe Saeger und Irmtraud Morgner gehen der Rolle der Frau nach. Morgner (es ist ein Auszug aus ihrem Roman Amanda. 1983). indem sie eine von Feuerbachs Thesen umkehrt: "Die Philoso-phen haben die Welt bisher nur männlich interpretiert. Es kommt aber darauf an. sie auch weiblich zu interpretieren, um sie men-schlich verändern 'zu können" (140). Holger Jackischs Beschreibung einer trüben Bahnhofsszenerie und einer Feier an einem Sylvesterabend in der DDR läßt die Frage nach dem indi-viduellen Anteil an gesellschaftlicher Veränderung offen. In dem Text von Jürgen Kögel geht es um die angeblich neue Qualität der Arbeit in der DDR. während Gisela Kraft in ihrer Parabel mögliche Interpretationen des Begriffs "Fortschritt" vor Augen führt.
