L i e r s c h s p e a k s o f a l l a u t h o r s as " L i e d e r m a -c h e r ; " " N i e d e r m a c h e r , " on t h e o t h e r h a n d , a r e t h e c r i t i c s . A l t h o u g h t h e two g r o u p s - -i n L i e r s c h ' s e y e s - - n e c e s s a r i l y d w e l l i n a d i a l e c t i c r e l a t i o n s h i p , t h e y work t o g e t h e r t o c r e a t e s o m e t h i n g " w h i c h rhymes w i t h t h e w o r l d . " Liersch stresses that the social dife of a p e o p l e - - i n c o n t r a s t t o t h e c o n s e q u e n t d e v e -l o p m e n t o f t h e s c i e n c e s - - u n d e r g o e s c o n t i n u a l a n d u n p r e d i c t a b l e c h a n g e . " T h e r e i s , " he c o n c l u d e s , "no c o n s t a n t e x p e r i e n c e o f h u m a n i t y and s o c i a l p r o g r a m w h i c h r e m a i n s c o n s t a n t l y c o r r e c t . " T h e m e m o r y o f a s o c i e t y must t h e r e f o r e be d i a l e c t i c . Liersch, a native of Berlin, was born in 1 932. H i s a c t i v i t i e s as e d i t o r and c r i t i c now e n c o m p a s s t w o d e c a d e s a n d i n c l u d e a b i o g r a p h y o f Hans F a l l a d a ( B e r l i n , 1 9 8 0 ) . Although Liersch concerns himself in these e s s a y s p r i m a r i l y w i t h GDR a u t h o r s - -B r o b o w s k i , F ü h r m a n n , and Hermann K a n t , t h e b o o k a l s o c o n t a i n s a p a r t i c u l a r l y i n t e r e s t i n g s t u d y o f T h o m a s Mann's e a r l y n o v e l l a " G e f a l l e n " and a d e l i g h t f u l a r t i c l e o n K a f k a . E s p e c i a l l y f a s c i n a t i n g i s L i e r s c h ' s s t u d y o f F r a n c o i s G a y o t d e P i t a v a l , t h e F r e n c h l e g a l s c h o l a r who i n 1743 b e g a n an e n c y c l o p e d i a o f c r i m i n a l c a s e s w h i c h w a s t o f i l l 20 v o l u m e s . S c h i l l e r d r ew upon e x c e r p t s f r o m t h i s w o r k , p u b l i s h e d i n German i n 1793. All material in the book has been published p r e v i o u s l y .
