It appears nonsensical that, while demographic and economic developments make the european labour market and welfare systems dependent on immigration for the next decades, eU countries still hesitate to open viable avenues for the legal entry of foreign workforce. Similarly, while 80% of those who are forced to leave their homes because of conflicts or persecutions find refuge in developing countries, europe keeps its door locked even for refugees from neighbouring countries like war-torn Syria. the 366 Somalis and eritreans who lost their lives only half a mile off the Italian island of Lampedusa would have been granted refugee status in Italy, if only they had arrived there alive. they had set off from Libya, where – like in all North African countries – no effective protection is granted to refugees, and sub-Saharan migrants are subjected to gross human rights violations by local authorities and smugglers alike. Om mijn reputatie waar te maken, ging ik vorige week een eindje hardlopen door het Wis- en Natuurkundegebouw. Met vijftien mannelijke studenten renden we de trap op naar de zesde verdie-ping, toen naar de andere kant van het gebouw en daar weer met de trap naar beneden, vervolgens over de begane grond terug naar de practicumzaal. Hoogleraren aardwe-tenschappen sprongen verschrikt opzij voor het aanstormend geweld van een groep biologen.Ik had de jongens gevraagd om de nacht van tevoren een t-shirtje te dragen en dan zonder deodorant te gebruiken, met het shirt nog aan, op het practicum te verschijnen. Aan hun nachtelijke lichaamsgeur voegden we nog wat vers zweet toe door onze hardloopactie in het gebouw. Nadat we uitgehijgd waren, legden we de identieke t-shirtjes op een rij neer. Vervolgens werden de vrouwe-lijke studenten één voor één binnenge-laten en mochten ze door te ruiken een keuze maken. Bij welk shirt kregen ze het gevoel: met deze jongen zou ik wel in bed willen liggen? Vervolgens hebben we de jongens en meisjes ‘gegenotypeerd’ voor een gen dat te maken heeft met het waar-nemen van androstenon, een veronder-stelde signaalstof die een rol zou spelen bij het aangaan van seksuele relaties. De theorie is dat vrouwen bij de keuze van een partner een voorkeur hebben voor iemand die in genetisch opzicht anders is dan zijzelf.Het rennen door de gangen was functioneel; het diende ertoe manne-lijk zweet te produceren. De keuzeproef illustreert een belangrijk principe uit de evolutiebiologie. Maar toch vraag ik me af: heeft het nut om dit soort capriolen uit te halen om je onderwijs spannender te maken? In dezelfde tijd hadden de studenten een belangwekkend artikel kunnen lezen. Maar het kan me niet sche-len. Ik vind het zelf zo leuk om dit soort dingen te doen. Ik geef onderwijs op de manier die ik zelf leuk vind. Is dat geen goed didactisch principe? As a consequence, migrants die not only during the Mediterranean crossing, but also while setting off from North Africa (two migrants were shot dead by the Libyan Coast Guard in early October), or in the desert (92 people died of dehydration in northern Niger, while heading towards the Mediterranean, at the end of October). the european Council meeting of October 23rd, after expressing “deep sadness at the recent and dramatic death of hundreds of people in the Mediterranean”, came to the conclusion that “the fight against trafficking and smuggling of human beings should be stepped up”, not only in the eU but also in countries of origin and transit. the eU Council also called for a reinforcement of Frontex (the eU border agency) and the implementation of eUROSUR (the new surveillance system for the Mediterranean). thus, european countries refuse to acknowledge that it is prohibitionist measures that pave the way for smuggling networks. Only opening humanitarian corridors for refugees from crisis regions, as well as effective legal entry channels for other migrants, could save human lives and put an end to both organized crime and the abuse of migrants’ rights.Paolo Cuttitta is post-doc researcher Faculty of Law, vU
