This article offers a critical interpretation of the historical and contemporary context underlying the purposes and the methods associated with the organisation of data and information in the various fields of knowledge by means of graphical classification. Essentially, the act of listing and enumeration allows the simultaneous exploration of different possibilities; it offers a privileged view of the world and facilitates effective problem solving. Graphical classification enhances the organisation of knowledge in a systematic and scientific manner, suggesting the logical inferences from which conjectures and theories may be formulated.
