Music is a powerful weapon in war time, with numerous important roles, from rousing spirits on the battlefields, to comforting those who stayed behind. Little surprise, then, that the First World War changed the course of British music, influencing everything from composition to performance, reception to recordings. This paper investigates recordings of classical music, made in England between 1914 and 1918. It aims to observe such recordings from several different perspectives, in order to understand the broad context from which they emerged, whilst observing their value and use nowadays
