Linked Data as method: Networks and the Periodical Julie Birkholz & Marianne Van Remoortel  WeChangEd, Department of Literary Studies Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium http://www.wechanged.ugent.be/  The advent of the use of Linked Data provides a wealth of opportunity for enhancing our knowledge on objects - whether it be documents, individuals, organizations and the like through distributed historical records. Linked Data is thus a “hyper” relational database that affords the linking of related objects through both public and private data stores, when stored in specific compatible ontologies, e.g. RDF. Despite the increased use of Linked Data and the enriching of data stores in this manner, no studies to our knowledge, in the Humanities, have explored how data stored in this nature affords specific relational projections that have largely remain hidden .   In this talk we show how the projection of Linked Data as multi-modal networks allows us to consider not only a larger scale of data, but also different lenses at which to consider both new research questions, as well as puts to question previous assumptions; thus lending both new and complementary insights. Using the WeChangEd Linked Data store, stored on NodeGoat, which consists of relational data of women editors and the periodicals they edited, from 1710 and 1920, from across Europe and Russia; we show through one of case of the periodical Der Bazar can be projected and thus how different possible conceptualizations of relationships can be conceived. We will discuss how storing the data in this way affords both new insights into the relationships, as well as the limitations of network methods in projecting historical data; as well as questioning how Linked Data is simultaneously a part the data collection and storage process as well as integral to the data pipelines we build in answering specific research questions.
