The fact that many conventionalproton conductors such as BaCe1-xZxYyO3-y/2 (BCZY)are oxides doped with lower valence elements is unhelp-ful to the development of single phase membranes, sincethe hydrogen-rich conditions in which these mustoperate favor n-type, rather than p-type, electronic con-duction. Despite that, membranes made with Tm and Rudoped perovskite proton conductors have been reportedto give moderate hydrogen fluxes [2, 3].An alternative approach is to separate the roles of theprotonic and electronic conductor by using a composite,for example SrZrO3/SrFeO3 [4] or BaCe0.2Zr0.7Y0.1O3-δ/Sr0.95Ti0.9Nb0.1O3-δ [5]. While relaxing the requirementfor two types of conductivity to coexist in one system,this approach introduces issues of fabrication, chemicalcompatibility and phase percolation, as well as issues ofpossible interfacial impedance at hetero-phase junctions.In this paper, percolation is treated via effective mediummodels for two-phase systems and the effective ambi-polar conductivity of a two-phase composite is derivedaccording to these models. Composite H2 permeationmembranes reported in the literature are discussed withreference to these issues, and also the surface reactionrate, which dominates performance at low temperatures.References1.
