A comparative analysis of the levels of degradation in selected residential neighbourhoods in the Municipality of Ljubljana

Abstract

The MA thesis examines and assesses selected residential neighbourhoods in the Municipality of Ljubljana from the aspect of the level of degradation. First, the theoretical bases present the structure of town and residential neighbourhoods and the issues relating to degraded areas, the assessment and monitoring of the condition in the area, the development of the theory of residential neighbourhoods,\ud the historical development of neighbourhoods in Slovenia, and the policies of residential neighbourhood renewals. The analysed residential neighbourhoods were selected from different quarters of Ljubljana: Bežigrad, Polje, Šiška, Trnovo, and Vič. The neighbourhoods were selected according to their years of construction, position, and size. Three groups of criteria (general, visualaesthetic, urban) were chosen to assess the residential neighbourhoods. The general criterion was used to assess data on the residents, households, and flats. The data were acquired from the Register-based census 2011, conducted by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia. The urban criterion was\ud used to study the provision of services and social activities as well as the orderliness of green surfaces\ud and the regulation of traffic in the selected residential neighbourhoods. The visual-aesthetic criterion examined the external appearances of buildings in the residential neighbourhoods (facades, windows, balconies, entrances). Using the assessments, statistical analyses were carried out to assess the relationships among the individual indicators that have an impact on the conditions of each\ud neighbourhood. On the basis of the acquired data, an assessment of the condition of each neighbourhood was given in comparison with the other neighbourhoods under discussion
