BUFFALO WOMEN'S LAW JOURNALconvicted Hutu leader Jean-PaulAkayesu of genocide for the massmurder of 500,000 people, 95 percent ofwhom were Rwandans, in 1994.The indictment of Akayesu wasamended during trial to include rape afterrepeatedly hearing testimonialdescriptions of tortuous rape byRwandan women. The court held that"[t]he rape of [Rwandan] women wassystematic and was perpetrated againstall [Rwandan] women and solely againstthem."Akayesu's conviction has createda celebration among activists for the legalimpact it will have on currently pendingwar-crimes cases. Irwin Cotler, vicechair of the International Center forHuman Rights and Democraticdevelopment in Montreal, said, "Raperemains underprosecuted andunderinvestigated. We are still pushingto get prosecutors to include rapecharges in their indictments."VOL. VII
