Jeong, Khanh Nguyen, and Melissa Perez at the FairSouthwestern Oklahoma State Uni­versity’s 21st Annual Research and Scholarly Activity Fair was held on April 15, 2014, in the Student Union Memorial Ballroom. This event gives students the opportunity to present their research and other scholarly ac­tivity in poster or podium presenta­tion formats. This year, around 200 SWOSU students and faculty mem­bers presented 103 research projects. Many of the presentations have been or will be presented at various organi­zational events at the state, regional, and national levels.This year’s fair also featured special musical performances by SWOSU members. Mshal Almaqbal performed two pieces of Saudi Arabian music, and Dr. Richard Tirk and theSWOSU Trumpet Ensemble per­formed “Fanfare for Argestes.” Mem­bers of the SWOSU Trumpet Ensem­ble included: Bethany Peyton, Britta­ny Carter, Andrew Carlson, Jakub Chermack, Mikela Connella, Jacquie Cox, Austin Hardman, Benjamin King, Joaquin Martinez, Ryan Meek, Davison Nguyen, and Tommy Smith. Gordon PerryResponsible  C onduct o f  Research TrainingThe National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health mandate that ALL students, post­doctoral researchers, trainees, fel­lows, and scholars who participate in any capacity in any NIH- or NSF- sponsored training, career develop­ment awards, or research grants re­ceive Responsible Conduct of Re­search (RCR) training.To comply with these NIH and NSF mandates and SWOSU’s Responsi­ble Conduct of Research Training Plan, SWOSU will present a one- day RCR training session on June 2, 2014, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (with a one-hour lunch break) in CPP 208. The Small Business Innova­tion Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs are focused on funding high-risk, high-payoff re­search projects that have significant commercial potential. This program has winners in every state, as well as us urban and rural areas. This unique funding in non-dilutive and allows for company retention of pa­tent rights!This seminar provides a detailed in­troduction to these programs. It is designed to cover program rules, eligibility requirements, nut and bolts fundamentals, and the broad range of differences among the fund­ing agencies. Components of a com­petitive SBIR/STTR application are discussed—as is the importance of the process of “getting ready to write.”Instructor Mark Henry is nationally known as an SBIR/STTR expert, and in the past 34 years has worked on some 2500 proposals. He has pre­sented more than 60 times at nation­al SBIR conferences. While manag­ing the government R&D sales ef­fort at Bend Research (Bend, OR) for 17 years, the firm won 175 of 350 SBIR/STTR proposals and had an 83% win rate on 72 Phase II pro- totype/demonstration proposals. Beyond the clear opportunities for small firms, academic research, in­cluding postdoctoral and graduate student researchers, can also partici­pate in these unique “small business” programs in a number of ways, in­cluding paid participation in R&D projects, ownership of the fundedsmall firms, and leveraging of “academic” preliminary data and in­tellectual property toward the com­mercial marketplace.Successful SBIR/STTR applications and projects are typically a “team sport.” University-based preliminary data and expertise are often key components of successful SBIR and STTR projects. SWOSU students and fac­ulty presented more than 45 pro­jects.The event was sponsored by the Ok­lahoma State Regents for Higher Ed­ucation (OSRHE), the Oklahoma Ex­perimental Program for Stimulating Competitive Research—National Sci­ence Foundation, the Oklahoma IDeA Network for Biomedical Re-search Excellence—National Insti­tutes of Health, and Oklahoma Re­gional Universities. It was organized by the Office of the Provost, Academ­ic Affairs, of UCO in cooperation with the Council on Research for Re­gional Universities and the UCO Of­fice of Research and Grants.The 2014 Oklahoma Research Day also featured a number of prominent speakers including Dr. Glen D. John­son, Chancellor for OSRHE; Dr. Don Betz, President of UCO; Dr. John Barthell, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for UCO; Dr. Gregory M. These artists have used expe­riences from China and America to in­spire their artistic creativity and their teaching methods in the classroom. This exhibition will offer a taste of their cross-cultural experiences to the public.A symposium to accompany the exhi-bition will also be offered. From  9 to 10 a.m. on January 15th, Mr. Yu Ji will give a lecture in the A rt Building, Room 405. A panel discussion led by M r. Ji and D r. Shaoqian Zhang will take place that afternoon from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the same location.This event is funded by the O k lahom a H u m an itie s  Council (OHC).
