Learning English language is an important role in formal or informal teaching process. However, teachers need a technique to make students learn English easily, enjoyable and motivated. One of alternative techniques is Reflective Journal. Thus, this research concerns about fostering students’ motivation in learning English language through reflective journal. The research was carried out in SMPN 2 Cileunyi.
The objective of this research is to know students’ motivation in learning English in the very beginning and in the last stage of their study by implementing reflective journal and to know the significant difference of students’ motivation in the very beginning and in the last stage of their study at second grade of SMPN 2 Cileunyi.
The method used in this research is qualitative method with case study design. The samples are derived from the population of the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Cileunyi. To collect the data and to measure students’ motivation in learning English, the samples are given questionnaire and observation.
The students` motivation in the very beginning of their study they have low motivation in learning English seen on the questionnaire 80% students did not decide the statement. Seen of the volume of students` writing it explores that the students’ motivation in learning English in the last stage of the study Based on the observation and questionnaire, it was found that 90% students in their last stage of study, they had increase their motivation in learning English.
Finally, it can be concluded that learning English by using reflective journal can improve students’ motivation at the eight-grade of SMPN 2 Cileunyi. And teaching English by using reflective journal is recommended for English teachers as it is an entertaining way to stimulate students to foster their motivation in learning English
