Vicki Hayes MD, Robert Bing-You MD,  Kalli Varaklis MD, Robert Trowbridge MD, Heather Kemp, Dina McKelvy Maine Medical Center Background Patient Outcomes Discussion Positive Outcomes Conclusion Methods Identify & Select Studies  • Effective feedback is crucial for learner competency acquisition • Patient care is a prominent feature in residency milestone sub-competencies  • There is limited published data on the relationship between feedback and patient outcomes 1. Utilized data source of 650 articles from 2016 scoping review of feedback in medical education 2. Identified articles that related to feedback and patient outcomes 3. Conducted a follow-up literature search 4. Developed a data extraction form 5. Reviewed studies and charted data 6. Collated, summarized and reported results             •Most studies showed a positive relationship between feedback and patient outcomes •Majority of studies focused on health care management and practice performance (indirect outcomes) •Most were short-term studies with small numbers •Very few randomized controlled trials •Primarily conducted at university teaching hospitals in the U.S. •Internal medicine the most common specialty studied    The learner feedback literature related to patient outcomes is sparse, primarily narrow in spectrum and of a non-rigorous design. More studies are needed to explore the use of feedback in teaching clinical outcomes improvement.
