In den vergangenen Jahren ist ein kritischer Impetus in die europäische Soziologie zurückgekehrt. Dies allerdings in zwei Varianten, so dass sich ein neuartiges Spannungsverhältnis zwischen »kritischer Soziologie« auf der einen und einer »Soziologie der Kritik« auf der anderen Seite entwickelt hat. Der Beitrag beleuchtet die Hintergründe dieser Spaltung und plädiert für ihre Überwindung. Eine kritische Soziologie der Kritik müsste demnach die Frage stellen, wie es kommt, dass die alltägliche Gesellschaftskritik der Leute nicht zu einer Veränderung der von ihnen kritisierten gesellschaftlichen Umstände führt. Soziologische Kritik kann sich nicht darauf beschränken, die sozialen Akteuren bei der Artikulation ihres Unbehagens an der Gegenwartsgesellschaft zu beobachten, sondern hat auch die Kritisierenden selber der Kritik auszusetzen – im Sinne einer Aufklärung des Sachverhalts, dass sie selbst eben jene Ordnung der Dinge reproduzieren oder gar koproduzieren, die sie zu Recht anklagen.
In recent years, critique has effectively made its way back into sociology throughout Europe. However, it has done so in two quite different ways, establishing a new academic division between »critical sociology«, on the one hand, and the »sociology of critique«, on the other. The paper tries to elucidate what this paradigmatic split is about, in order then to argue for overcoming the current clash of criticisms. A critical sociology of critique would have to ask the question of why it is that people’s everyday criticism laid open by the sociology of critique does not lead to a change in the things people do criticize. Sociological critique cannot restrict itself to give voice to people charging their society’s rules of domination, but in a sense it has to be critical of people themselves, making them aware of the fact that they effectively reproduce or even co-produce the very rules they rightly criticize
