Josep Maria Junoy's Four and Five-Line Poems in El Dia : a Meditation on the Haiku

Abstract

In 1920, a Catalan poet who had become well known because of his Cubist calligrammes, Josep Maria Junoy, published "Amour et paysage," a volume written in the Japanese haiku form, which had become very popular in France during the preceding years. But already in the newspaper "El Dia" he had published several poems made up of four or five lines, some of which were repeated. This article analyses them as a meditation on the haiku form and as a guide to reading the haiku of "Amour et paysage.
