During the decade of the 1990´s, in the context of the economic reforms
inaugurated by the government of Collor de Mello, the Brazilian industry
experienced a significant process of productive restructuring, with prominence
for the movement of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) observed in the period. The
relative scarcity of empirical studies applied to specific sectors does not allow a
more effective analysis of the impacts associated with this phenomenon of M&A.
The aim of this paper is to evaluate if and to what extent the M&A transactions
have affected the evolution of the concentration in the Brazilian agrochemical
industry in the period of 1990-2004. The methodological approach consists of the
elaboration of a typology for the characterization of the M&A transactions and of
the application of a counterfactual factorial decomposition method. The conclusion
is that the M&A transactions have contributed directly and significantly to the
increase of the level of concentration in the agrochemical industry in the analyzed
period.Ao longo da década de 90 do século XX, no contexto das reformas econômicas
inauguradas pelo Governo Collor de Mello, a indústria brasileira experimentou
um significativo processo de reestruturação produtiva, com destaque para o
movimento de fusões e aquisições (F&A) verificado no período. A relativa escassez
de estudos empíricos e aplicados a setores específicos tem impossibilitado
uma análise mais efetiva dos impactos associados a esse fenômeno. O objetivo
deste artigo é avaliar se e em que medida as transações de F&A afetaram a
evolução da concentração na indústria brasileira de agroquímicos, no período
1990-04. A metodologia utilizada consistiu na elaboração de uma tipologia para
a caracterização das transações de F&A e na aplicação de um método contrafactual
de decomposição fatorial. Concluiu-se que as F&A contribuíram direta e
significativamente para o aumento do nível de concentração no setor e no período
analisados.
