The notion of economic growth is linked to the vision of technological and
institutional change as a process, such as proposed by the old institutionalist
tradition of Vebien, Commons and Mitchell. In this context, growth is viewed in a
historical, processual and cumulative perspective. This approach is theoretically
opposed to the traditional orthodoxy, which understands such a process as a
position of steady state equilibrium. However, the institutionalist approach to
economic growth is not object of consensus, inasmuch as the very concept of
institution is controversial. This paper discusses some of these divergences,
emphasizing that such approach has a theoretical content.A noção de crescimento econômico, decorrente de um processo de mudança
tecnológica e institucional, é originária da velha tradição institucionalista, que,
desde Vebien, Commons e Mitchell, o define sob uma perspectiva histórica,
processual e cumulativa. Isso se confronta com a visão tradicional da ortodoxia
que o vincula às posições teóricas do equilíbrio de "steady state". A visão
institucionalista de crescimento, porém, não é consensual, já que a própria
definição de instituição não é objeto de concordância. O que se quer estabelecer
neste artigo é que há uma agenda de pesquisa bem definida que contempla
a incorporação das mudanças estruturais, tecnológicas e institucionais.
