The focus was puton “Challenges for PMEM – multiple/stacked events andlong term effects”. In a series of talks and in three work-ing groups, participants were considering three keytopics of current discussions about Monitoring of geneti-cally modified (GM) plants in Europe:• Herbicide tolerant transgenic crops• Transgenic crops that harbor stacked events• Detection of long-term effects caused by the cultiva-tion of transgenic crops66 participants from 14 countries attended the work-shop.The scientific programme of the workshop was devel-oped by the programme committee consisting of the fol-lowing experts: Detlef BARTSCH (Germany), Olivier SANVIDO(Switzerland), Gerd NEEMANN (Germany), Joachim SCHIE-MANN (Germany), Kerstin SCHMIDT (Germany), JeremySWEET (UK).The commercial growth of GM crops has been estab-lished worldwide in 25 countries covering a total of134 million hectares, i.e. approx. 10% of arable land in2009 (ISAAA Brief 41; FAO Statistics Division 2011).The steady worldwide increase of GM crop cultivationis accompanied by an intense and ongoing discussionabout the assessment of the environmental impactscaused by GM crops. Particular challenges are posedfor PMEM which became mandatory in Europe in accor-dance to Directive 2001/18/EC. Key issues of PMEM hadbeen consecutively discussed within the series of the inter-national workshops at JKI since 2006 (see Journal forConsumer Protection and Food Safety 2006: 1 Supp. 1;2007: 2 Supp. 1; 2008: 3 Supp. 2). Contributions (talksand posters) to the workshop in Quedlinburg 2010 areavailable at Nature Precedings: http://precedings.nature.com/collections/post-market-monitoring-2010.In this issue a set of five further elaborated papers recon-sider (1) the impact and (2) monitoring of herbicide-tol-erant transgenic crops, (3) suggest strategies for moni-toring of soil, (4) represent the experiences from Braziland (5) summarize the activities to create a consistent as-sessment framework in the project BioOK funded by theGerman Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).The organizers thank the Federal Ministry of Food,Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) for finan-cial support. Mai 2010 fand der vierte internationaleWorkshop zum Anbaubegleitenden Monitoring von gen-technisch veränderten Pflanzen (GVP) im Julius Kühn-Institut, Bundesforschungsinstitut für Kulturpflanzen inQuedlinburg statt. Den thematischen Schwerpunkt bil-deten die Herausforderungen, die insbesondere durchgekoppelte transgene Merkmale in neueren Sorten undden Nachweis von Langzeit-Effekten an das anbaubeglei-tende Monitoring gestellt werden. Mit Schwerpunkt-vorträgen, drei Arbeitsgruppen und Postern wurdeninsbesondere drei Kernthemen der diesjährigen Tagungbehandelt:• Herbizid-tolerante transgene Kulturpflanzen• Pflanzen mit mehreren gekoppelten Transgenen• Nachweis von Langzeit-EffektenAm wissenschaftlichen Workshop beteiligten sich 66 Teil-nehmer aus 14 Nationen.202Workshop PMEMDas Workshop-Programm wurde durch das Programm-Komitee zusammengestellt, dem folgende Experten ange-hörten: Detlef BARTSCH (Deutschland), Olivier SANVIDO(Schweiz), Gerd NEEMANN (Deutschland), Joachim SCHIE-MANN (Deutschland), Kerstin SCHMIDT (Deutschland) undJeremy SWEET (Großbritannien).Der kommerzielle Anbau von gentechnisch veränder-ten Pflanzen ist mittlerweile in 25 Ländern auf einerFläche von 134 Millionen Hektar etabliert (etwa 10% derweltweiten Ackerflächen; Stand 2009; ISAAA Brief 41;FAO Statistics Division 2011). Der weltweite Anstieg derGVP-Anbauflächen geht einher mit einer breiten inter-nationalen Diskussion über die Bewertung der Umwelt-wirkungen von GVP. Eine besondere Herausforderungstellt das anbaubegleitende Monitoring dar, das ent-sprechend der Richtlinie 2001/18/EG innerhalb der EUverbindlich durchzuführen ist. Kernthemen des anbau-begleitenden Monitoring wurden seit 2006 in der Reiheinternationaler Workshops am JKI aufgegriffen (s. Jour-nal für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit2006: 1 Supp. 1; 2007: 2 Supp. 1; 2008: 3 Supp. 2). Bei-träge zum Workshop in Quedlinburg 2010 sind bei NaturePrecedings veröffentlicht: http://precedings.nature.com/collections/post-market-monitoring-2010.In der vorliegenden Ausgabe des Journal für Kultur-pflanzen werden darüber hinaus fünf umfassender aus-gearbeitete Beiträge präsentiert, die die (1) Auswirkungenund das (2) Monitoring des Anbaus von transgenen Her-bizid-toleranten Pflanzen untersuchen, (3) Vorschläge fürein Monitoring des Boden-Ökosystems unterbreiten, (4)über Erfahrungen aus Brasilien berichten und (5) die Akti-vitäten des BMBF-Forschungsverbundes BioOK im Rah-men der Entwicklung eines konsistenten Bewertungssys-tems für den Anbau von transgenen Pflanzen vorstellen.Die Organisatoren danken dem Bundesministeriumfür Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz(BMELV) für die finanzielle Unterstützung. Dank giltauch den Mitgliedern des Programm-Komitees für dieZusammenstellung der wissenschaftlichen Beiträge, dieLeitung der Veranstaltung und die Berichte aus den Arbeits-gruppen.
