Beach Stuff, c.1946

Abstract

Lismer sets us a dynamic rhythm of organic shapes encircling just inside the frame of the painting. No doubt the beach lore of Nova Scotia, perhaps Cape Breton Island, inspired this work. At this time Lismer created sketches titled Boat, Beach and Blue Water, Cape Breton Island (1946) and Floats and Buoys (1946) in the Collection of the National Gallery of Canada
