Manipulation of cooled beam for future heavy ion therapy

Abstract

Irradiation of heavy ion beam has proved to be more effective for cancer therapy than conventional X-ray irradiation, because the ion beam efficiently generates DNA double strand break in tumor cells. In order to deliver a high quality beam for biophysics experiments, electron cooler, wideband rf system, and extraction kicker has been installed in Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC).
