Visitors • Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean Janet Ericksen spoke to the group first. She  encouraged those present to read a recent article at the Inside Higher Education web site, “Small Liberal Arts Colleges as Learning Innovation Base Camps.”  The author of the article  used the base camp metaphor as it could apply to learning innovation.  Janet noted we are set up with the tools listed in the article: 1) A Commitment to Impact, 2) A Sense of Shared Responsibility, and 3) A Culture of Caring. The article can be viewed at:  https://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/technology-and-learning/small-liberal-arts-colleges-learning-innovation-base-camps  Next, Janet spoke on the Mellon Foundation opportunity. The Mellon Foundation has provided UMM with funds to use in support of faculty-student research projects (ones that would not be eligible for UROP).  She noted, “The goal is to encourage humanities research beyond producing traditional academic scholarship and to help demonstrate how broad the reach of Humanities really is.”  Projects are not limited to Humanities Division faculty and students. She encouraged Social Scientists to apply. Additional information and application instruction were included in her 8-23-18 email.    • Chancellor Michelle Behr spoke next. With President Kaler’s decision to step down after the academic year, she encouraged everyone to get involved in the U Of M Presidential search.  She asked us to bring our differences to the table, use our voice, and chip in to articulate the qualities we believe the next President should have.  A Search Committee has not been formed yet.  A contingency of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee will be holding a “listening session” in Morris in September.  Continuing involvement in the process once finalists are named was encouraged as well.   Chancellor Behr spoke to her remarks from the Opening Faculty/Staff Convocation. She has received feedback that some found her words harsh and depressing. She explained that her remarks were meant as a “call to action.”  She will continue to respond to the Regents as they ask her about Morris’ progress.  One faculty member noted they appreciated the straight talk, providing a reality check and reminder that we need to address our problems.   Chancellor Behr also encouraged everyone to be patient while we put out heads together and figure out how to make the most of the new Community Hour.   Lastly, she asked faculty and staff to take advantage of her open office hours as a chance to connect with her. Specifics on days and times of office hours will be emailed out soon.  • Charise DeBerry, assistant director for McNair program addressed the group next. She is the assistant director to Nancy Carpenter, Director of the Morris McNair program.  Referring the group to the McNair at Morris website, Charise reviewed the program. Quoting from the website: The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement program is one of a suite of federal TRiO programs sponsored by the US Department of Education. Its purpose is "to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities." McNair applicants must be: low income, first generation (neither parent has a bachelor's degree) and underrepresented in doctoral fields. Applicants must also be a US citizen, have earned 30 credits, and be enrolled full-time in a degree program at Morris.  She appreciates faculty recommendations for the program (via a nomination letter). Going forward, the process will be more selective as they are able to accept fewer numbers of scholars (number equal to the number of graduates). Seniors are eligible - only if they are planning on attending Morris one more year.  Freshman must have 30 credits before they can apply. Faculty can recommend students through the McNair at Morris website.  Students can also apply online. Applicants must obtain a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who knows them well (via a secure link provided by McNair staff).     Charise recognized the McNair Program alums (Marissa Holst) and current scholars (Jake Barnes, Anth/Soc Student Representative and Kaila Akina, Pre-doc Fellow) in the room. Roger gave a thumbs up for his experience in working with Charise.   There is compensation for faculty mentoring research and students (faculty one payment, students receive 3 payments). In addition, faculty volunteers are welcome to assist in other ways.   Watch for more information on the McNair Research Symposium on Sept. 4. Scholars will showcase their McNair Scholar research conducted over the summer. Poster presentations will be in Oyate Hall, Oral Presentations in Imholte Hall with an Open House after in the ACE Office.Lastly, Charise welcomes any feedback on the program. She is located in ACE, Student Center 10C.   • Alisande Allaben, Grants Development, Pre and Post- Awards Grant Coordinator  Alisande segued the McNair topic by pointing out the McNair Program is a grant her office assisted with. She went on to explain her office offers assists with both internal and external grants, and administers external grant funds.   Alisande went on to briefly describe a few different grant sources including the different categories of FREF. She reminded folks that FREF III ($400) applications must be submitted 2 weeks before travel, no exceptions. She went onto to say the FREF program has been so successful, other campus’ are initiating similar programs. Alisande mentioned other programs that her office can assist faculty with such as Grant in Aid, Imagine Grants, Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), and GPS Alliance Travel Grant.    The annual Celebration of Scholarly Accomplishments is approaching. The Poster deadline is  September 10. The Celebration of Scholarly Accomplishments event will be in November. It’s a chance to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and see what your colleagues have been doing.    Lastly, she wanted to let us know that despite Roger Wareham leaving UMM, the Grant’s Office is fully staffed with herself, Jodi Sperr, Ted Pappenfus (faculty advisor), and Grants admin folks from the Twin Cities.    Welcome and Introductions  For the benefit of new faculty members, all present introduced themselves around the room. In addition to their name, each mentioned their years of service, role (and other news if applicable - babies, promotion, etc.).  Arne made the following announcements:  • Arrivals o New Faculty -Kaila Akina, pre-doctoral fellow -Allan Kellehear, Distinguished Visiting Professor of the Liberal Arts Evan joined us in January and not here today o Faculty Returning from leave: -Ed Brands o Faculty crossing the tenure hurdle: -Bibhudutta Panda • Departures o Sabbaticants/SSL -Jennifer Deane- continuing role in ace office with fellowships and scholarships -Kevin Whalen (Spring 2019) o Faculty in last year:  -Leslie Meek  Old Business: Approve minutes from 3/19/18 meeting Minutes from the division meeting of March 19, 2018 were unanimously approved.   Continuation of Visitors (these from our Division)  • Rebecca Dean spoke as the Chair of Assessment of Student Learning Committee.  The Committee oversees and provides support to all aspects of the assessment process, receives all data and materials generated by assessment activities, recommends improvements in the assessment program, and disseminates reports on the results of assessment and the initiatives based on assessment intended to improve student learning.   Program Assessment Plans are due September 28th.  These plans lay out how disciplines will assess Program Learning Outcomes.  Submitting modifications of last year’s report is fine.    Higher Learning Commission (HLC)’s report was positive, however it noted assessment hasn’t been done consistently.  The reaccreditation visit is schedule for October 2019.   The Canvas site contains all plans, and should be accessible by all faculty.  If you have trouble with the site, let Rebecca know.  Later today, Rebecca is holding open hours to assist with plans and modifications.    If you teach a large intro course with a GER, you might be hearing from Rebecca.  She would like to offer help with general assessment of education program. She also recommended adding wording to syllabi that student work might be used for assessment.  • Heather Peters, Master Adviser Both Heather and Bibhu Panda are currently serving as Master Advisors. Heather passed out a One Stop reference card. The card included a list of information from One Stop such as: dates/deadlines, tuition costs, fees, and staff information.   She also offered the following information:  1. 30% of our students are low income. If you have an advisee or student that mentions they have no money for food, refer them ACE. Because the Food Shelf has limited hours, food bags are available on campus.  2. Remember if you giving an Incomplete, a contract must be filed. Any I grades point to a potential retention risk. I’s turn to F’s after 6 months.  It is best to have a discussion with advisees about I’s, asking how many I’s they have and are taking. Giving an I can potentially set them up to fail.  Remind students about the one time W (withdrawal).  3. If a student has 150 credits, they no longer qualify for financial aid.  This often happens when students come to UMM with transfer credits, or have a triple major, for example. Once student graduate with one major, they no longer qualify for financial aid.  Advisors can suggest students hold off on graduating until both majors are done. 4. 80% of our students are coming in with transfer credits. If an APAS lists transfer credits “in progress,” make sure to clear them up before graduation. She also mentioned APAS will be in color now, which will be helpful.   5. If advising a student to stay for a 5th year, keep the credit limit (150) and fees for attending in mind.  6. Any student registering for more than 20 credits will need the Registrar’s approval. 7. Tuition caps at 12 credits, meaning 13 to 20 credits are the same price as 12.   8. Tell advisees to not share their login information with parents.  9. One Stop Staff are trained in personal finance. If students are struggling with a budget, send them to One Stop for assistance.   10. If a student’s parent dies, a parent becomes unemployed, or if parents cut them off financially, remind students to redo the FASFA. 11. If students are having trouble financially due to an emergency situation, send them to One Stop. There are scholarships available, but students are only eligible if advisors recommend the student.  One time grants can help pay an existing bill up to $1000, allowing the student to register for the next semester.  12. If recommending a student to visit One Stop, faculty are asked to email One Stop. That way if the student doesn’t show up, One Stop can follow up.    13. Any students with 90 credits or more will be receiving an email to apply for graduation.   Back to Introductions Arne asked Dr. Allan Kellehear, Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Liberal Arts to tell us more about himself.  Dr. Kellehear is a 50th Anniversary Professor (End of Life Care) and Academic Director for the Digital Health Enterprise Zone (DHEZ - Academic) at the University of Bradford, England.  He studies the 12 months prior to death.  He described himself as a medical and public health sociologist with interests in death, dying and end of life care. He has held posts all over the world including Japan, Australia, and Canada.  He has published 23 books and 100+ articles.   His approach is extremely interdisciplinary.  He will give two public lectures, and is willing to visit classes. Arne invited everyone to the welcome reception a week from today in the McGinnis Room.   Division Announcements and Updates Chair Kildegaard and others provided the following information: 1. Discipline Coordinators: separate document.  ANTH correction – Rebecca not Joe 2. Catalog deadline & meetings: separate document – Discipline Coordinators see Terri for information about the Catalog process.   3. Promotion and Tenure:  -Timetable (separate document) -Retention cases:  Lindberg, Narvaez, Ortiz, Whalen -Annual Review Cases: Baldelomar, Beaver, Bruce, Devkota, James, Michael  4. Searches: still unknown. Depending on how many searches are approved campus-wide, we may have a Psychology search. Addendum: Arne later emailed that pending enrollments updates, the Chancellor did not approve the Psychology search for next year. Only one 1 tenure track search was approved campus-wide.  5. Work Study: The Division received $12,000 in Federal Work Study. Each faculty member will be allowed $435. Sharon reminds students must receive approval from Financial Aid before they can begin work. We also have a meager amount of IWS for students not FWS eligible.  6. Division Faculty Development Resources  -  A small amount is available for things such as travel and supplies. This year, memberships will not be funded.   7. Events calendar  - Faculty no longer have access to add (or delete) events. Let the staff (or Terri’s student) know if you want something added.  8. Staff reduction - Sharon’s new hours are 8:00 to 11:45 a.m. Expect some reduction of services as a result.  Provide plenty of lead time for copying and scanning requests. You may need to do some last minute copying yourself.  Laura comes in at 12 45 p.m.  The office may be closed during lunches or other times, remember to carry your key. Please be patient as we navigate this new world.    9. New policy on make-up exams – the reduction in staff means proctoring exams in the office will be limited to 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 to 4:30 p.m.  10. MSAF – Terri is still looking for a MSAF student. Please recommend anyone you think would be a good fit.   11. WiFi – we received notice that wifi has been upgraded for IH 101 and thus residual effect for IH 3 (the Anth lab) as well.   12. Parenting Accommodations – Due to the new Parenting Accommodations policy, Kevin and Ben will have reduced teaching loads this year.      Elections Social Committee: Joe Beaver and Emily Bruce agreed to continue to serve as the Division’s Social Committee.  Emily reminded folks she is collecting funds for baby gifts, etc.   Other Items 1. Heather asked if the policy committee will be populated for 7.12 revisions.  It was decided that  Heather Peters, Rebecca Dean, Sheri Breen, Jennifer Rothchild will consult with Seung-Ho Joo to recommends changes. Leslie offered to join the group as needed, she was on the committee when the 7.12 was last revised.   2. Roger Rose gave an IRB update. He still holds a seat on the U of M IRB Committee.  There is some question as to if UMM will retain a seat.  This is concerning, especially from a Grant’s aspect.  Once it is known if Morris’ seat on IRB is secure, Roger is willing to give up the seat.  IRB is in the process of change, and once that change takes place, some Social Science requests may fall into an exempt category, and may not need IRB approval. He reminded folks this is a paid position (not salary, but $$ back to the Division/Discipline).  If anyone is interested in the seat, or has any IRB questions, see Roger.
