The prime educational objectives for the remote regions course of study has been to train professional teachers of Japanese who have no phyisical access to an educational institution, or whose access to such an institution is restricted by time, location or financial resources. Recently, as a result of the increasing presence of foreign workers in local communities and companies, a number of ordinary people with no professional credentials have taken on the responsibility of teaching Japanese. The purpose of this broadcast course is not only to train professional teachers of Japanese, but also to help local citizens to learn Japanese language teaching techniques and to enable them to learn by themselves. Using as a case study Nihongo no Kyoiku to Sono Riron, which is one of the courses at the University of the Air in Japan, this paper evaluates the appropriateness of the course and course material design as a contribution to distant learning
