Critical literacy and critical thinking has been recognized as an essential skill in general education and language learning activities. The development of critical literacy and thinking skill is important to the students’ educational success in their current and future grades as thinking is a way of learning content. Storytelling project attains to emerge critical literacy and critical thinking skills. The more they can develop higher order skills by reading and making judgments about the credibility of sources of information.
This paper is written to achieve the objectives: 1) to find outwhat are critical literacy skills that emerging inthe process of preparing thescript of storytelling project, 2) to find out what critical thinking skills are emerging inthe process of preparing the script of storytelling project.
Thisqualitative research, particularly a case study. This researchwas conducted to the forth semester of class A at English Education Department of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The research data was obtained from observation, document analysis, and questionnaire. The data transcribed, categorized into central themes, and interpreted into a description form and response results.
The finding shows that the process of preparing the script in storytelling project is established by three principles proposed by McLaughlin & DeVoogd (2004), they are creating alternative text, Connection Stems, and Switching. Moreover, in feed backing performance is established by implementing the four features of critical thinking classroom, such as frequent evaluative questions, encouragement of active learning, developmental tension, and fascinating with the contingency conclusion (Browne & Freeman, 2000).
In conclusion, the finding shows that storytelling project could improve and emerge the students' critical literacy and critical thinking ability. Then it was recommended that the next research offers the various methodologies how to involve critical thinking skill and critical literacy in the classroom and the more variety of materials should be used to encourage the students' critical literacy and critical thinking
